Many years ago my Ukrainian Grandma (Baba) taught me to knit, in the old world style. Not sure what that meant at the time, I quickly turned my first project (pot holders) into a very long scarf because I didn't know how to cast off. Old world Russian and Ukrainian/Polish women knit in a tight symmetrical method that seals the yarn (regardless of the stitch) so that it keeps out the cold and is darn near waterproof. I use this same method to create my baby/adult knit hats known to all Canadian's as Touque(s) (pronounced Tu//:k). Along with high quality yarn, the result is exceptional touques, boot cuffs and finger-less mittens. These mitts are perfect for keeping your hands warm while still being able to text on your phone, navigate the GPS in your car and find stuff in your purse with out taking them off. Most Canadian's would not consider them useful or healthy for -20C weather, but everyone South of the 49th parallel will love them.
