Time for peeling alder broom handles! The peeled wood naturally takes on a beautiful deep red hue - and apparently my hands do as well!

  • About

A passion for traditionally handcrafted items for around the home

I am a craftsperson creating handmade brooms, wooden bowls, and wooden spoons among other items for the home. My goal is to create high quality, aesthetically pleasing and useful handcrafted items, while keeping tradition and history at the forefront of my work. I strive to create items that can become family heirlooms, keeping with them memories and traditions for generations to come. While I hope to create pieces that are beautiful, everything I make is also designed for use, as I believe that craft is defined by an intersection of appeal and function.

I strive to source my materials through local and sustainable channels and to use products that are non-toxic, both to the user and their environment. I am passionate about spending time outdoors and want that passion to be evident in my craft. I want to use craft to contribute to a culture of community, of building connections between people and their environment.

In addition to providing useful items, I am also passionate about passing knowledge along to others. I am both a teacher and student, sharing what I have learned and learning continually myself. I draw inspiration for my work from the craft traditions of several cultures, from Scandinavian style spoon carving to Appalachian broom making, among others!

Please check out my website www.TraditionalNecessities.com for more information about who I am, what inspires me, a gallery of my work, a blog, and much more!
