Announcement   Reclaimed Glass + Fusion + Elegance + Function
My work is an effort to create objects of beauty and utility, while diverting useful glass from the landfills. I am a Reclaimed Glass Artisan who fuses and slumps reclaimed glass in my studio in Portland, Oregon. I work with scrap glass, including window, picture-frame and aquarium glass, that is donated to me by local glass-shops and community members. These types of glass are typically excluded from most municipal recycling programs.

About

Transforming Scrap-Glass into Functional Art

Our waste-stream is full of useful materials. As a human who loves my earthly home, I feel a responsibility to create and consume in mindful ways, and to reuse some of what can be reused. Glass is so amazing in how many times it can be remade!

I work with a combination of pre-consumer scrap-glass and used window/picture-frame/aquarium glass. I receive donations of glass from local community members, and I also source glass from a local glass shop that works on projects such as shower doors, shelves, windows, picture-frames, and table-tops. After working on these projects, the glass-shop employees have left-over scraps, both large and small, that would typically be tossed in their dumpster and landfill-bound, but instead they are set aside for me to pick up and recycle. These types of glass, often called float glass, or flat glass, are chemically different from container & bottle glass. They can not be mixed with bottle or container glass and are not included in most municipal recycling programs. While this glass is not made for fusing, it can be fused, and with a lot of patience and perseverance, it can yield delightful results.

I cut, grind, clean and assemble glass pieces into various shapes and layers in my studio in Portland, Oregon. Every piece goes through the kiln for at least 2 firings, and most go through 3 firings. Every time I open the kiln, I am eager to see what I will find. Each piece, while often similar to others, is unique in subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle ways. I am continuously inspired by and in love with the process of transforming scrap glass into beautiful, functional glassware.

I began fusing and slumping reclaimed glass over eight years ago. My studio was born out of a desire to create functional and beautiful objects, a need to support my family, and a growing awareness of the useful glass in our waste-stream.

Hello and Welcome!

Transformations Glassworks is a one-woman operation, made possible by the support of my loving family! I have been fusing reclaimed glass for eight plus years now, and consider my art and work as an ever-evolving process. Every piece I make, while similar to others, is unique and unlike any other. My work is an effort to create objects of beauty and utility while diverting useful glass from the landfills.

Additional policies and FAQs
Due to the nature of working with reclaimed scrap-glass, every piece is unique. Pieces in a set, or of a particular style, may be very similar, but not identical.

The type of glass that I work with, often called “float glass,” “window glass,” or “flat glass,” was not created for the purpose of fusing, though it can be used this way. It is quite different from standardized art glass made for fusing. It is glass that is left over from projects such as picture frames, single-pane windows, shower doors, aquariums, table-tops, shelving units, and/or decorative windows.
