About

How it all started

How did I end up here?
I was born and raised in New Orleans. I love everything about New Orleans… the culture, the people and the way we talk, the food, the architecture, the music. I love the way we will turn any and all events into a party with tons of food and alcohol. I love the way we will turn every stranger into a friend and every friend into family.
But after Katrina hit my beautiful city in 2005, my city was never the same. Something about the New Orleans I grew up in changed. It was time to move on.
My family and I had taken many trips (after Katrina) to Austin, TX and fell in love with the city. So, in 2013 we moved and ended up in Round Rock, TX (just north of Austin).
Between 2005 and 2013 we went through 3 more hurricanes, after Katrina. We lost power for weeks at a time. No AC, no refrigeration, water is limited, curfews are in place, cells phone connections are spotty. You kinda lose contact with the outside world. Stores are closed (no food available), so you have to rely on the National Guard coming in and bringing water, ice and MRE’s.
These moments got my family to thinking about a “prepping” life style. We wanted to start being more prepared for situations like this. Now, living in Central Texas, we aren’t gonna run into the problems of a hurricane so much but there is a drought problem here and the way the world is going…. who knows what tomorrow holds.
Now with all that said, why soap?
Making soap had always interested me, but there is NO WAY I could make soap. Soap making is for the big manufacturers to do, not me.
Well, the more I was reading and learning about prepping, the more I was seeing that I COULD actually make soap myself. I could control what goes into my soap. I could omit the chemicals. I could make it smell however I wanted it to smell. I could add essential oils and botanicals to help or prevent. And most importantly, for me, I could be as creative as I want to be with it.
Once I made my first “tester” batch, to see if I could actually do it and if I even liked doing it, my creative juices started flowing and now soap making has become kind of an addiction for me.
So, I thought if I enjoy it this much, why not make a business out of it. Let’s see where this can take me.
Why the name Gumbo Ya-Ya?
New Orleans has a language of its own. We are part of the Deep South but we don’t have a deep southern drawl, surprisingly we have a hint of a Brooklyn accent. Many of our words are French influenced and many are food related.
I wanted the name of my business to represent who I am and where I come from. I wanted a name that would help keep the old New Orleans alive. Looking through the language that is uniquely New Orleans, Gumbo Ya-Ya fit perfectly.
Gumbo Ya-Ya: Translated means everybody talking all at once.
i.e.: At a loud party
This is the way we get together. This is who I am!!
