Stavo ridecorando la stanza di mio figlio di 3 anni mentre stava facendo la transizione da un letto per bambini a un letto di dimensioni standard e volevo un arredamento della camera più maturo che non sarebbe rapidamente cresciuto. Pensavo che una mappa degli Stati Uniti avrebbe dato un aspetto classico, ma avevo bisogno di una componente divertente che coinvolgesse anche lui. È qui che sono entrati in gioco i magneti! Non solo magneti qualsiasi, ma ho avuto l'idea per i magneti che rappresentano i suoi familiari che vivono lontano. Ha cugini in Michigan che vede solo una volta all'anno. Ha i nonni quell'inverno in Arizona. Ha una sorella al college in Nebraska, che ha la fantastica opportunità di viaggiare per il paese con diverse squadre sportive Husker, il che significa anche che non torna a casa spesso. Avevo bisogno che mio figlio capisse perché non avrebbe visto questi cari di persona su base regolare. Avevo bisogno che capisse che anche se c'è una distanza geografica che ci separa, queste persone sono ancora membri della sua famiglia e può usare la sua mappa come mezzo per rimanere in contatto con loro.

Quando uno dei membri della nostra famiglia viaggia, mio figlio può spostarli a destinazione e poi quando tornano, li riporta a casa. Che modo inconsapevole di insegnare la geografia ai bambini piccoli! Rido del momento in cui indicò la penisola superiore nel Michigan e poiché era dello stesso colore del resto dello stato, mi disse consapevolmente: "Mamma, anche questo è il Michigan". Ho dovuto guardarmi da vicino e grattarmi la testa e pensarci, prima di rendermi conto, sì, mio figlio mi aveva appena insegnato qualcosa. Forse l'avevo imparato alle elementari e solo temporaneamente dimenticato, ma devo ammettere che non sono mai stato così bravo con la geografia. Con questo in mente, c'è un'ironia definita che ora sto creando queste mappe.

Mio figlio adora la sua mappa, quando la toglievo dalla sua parete mentre lavoravo attraverso il processo creativo di andare in produzione, mi chiedeva dove fosse. Alla fine mi resi conto che avevo bisogno di spiegargli che avrei fatto mappe proprio come le sue anche per altri ragazzi e ragazze. I suoi occhi divennero grandi e disse: "Tu sei?" Pensava che quell'idea fosse piuttosto ordinata!

Con il tema luoghi da visitare, persone da vedere e modi per arrivarci, volevo che i bambini usassero le loro mappe in modi diversi. Ho incluso punti di riferimento nazionali e fatti su di loro per rendere i bambini entusiasti di conoscere luoghi diversi e potenzialmente viaggiare per vederli un giorno. Ho incluso le persone in modo che potessero rimanere in contatto con i propri cari. Ho incluso modalità di trasporto, perché i bambini amano giocare con auto e aerei. Ma la parte migliore è il fatto che i magneti possono essere personalizzati. Le immagini reali dei loro cari possono essere stampate e apposte sulle immagini generiche, rendendo la mappa unicamente speciale per loro. Sulla mappa di mio figlio abbiamo anche magneti che rappresentano luoghi di vacanza. La mia preferita è una foto di un castello di sabbia, secchio e pala posizionati su Virginia Beach per aiutarci a conservare i ricordi di quella fantastica vacanza in famiglia.

Le opportunità con i magneti sono infinite! Quanto sarebbe fantastico per un bambino imparare i propri stati e capitali posizionando il magnete appropriato sulla mappa? E se sei una famiglia orientata allo sport, puoi mettere le tue squadre preferite sulla mappa. In alternativa, usa la mappa per contrassegnare gli stati in cui hai viaggiato. Usa il foglio di etichette della stampante incluso nella mappa e lascia correre la tua creatività!

I was redecorating my 3 year old son's room as he was making the transition from a toddler bed to a full sized bed and I wanted more mature room décor that he would not quickly outgrow. I thought a map of the United States would give a classic look, but I needed a fun component that would engage him too. That’s where the magnets came in! Not just any magnets, but I had the idea for the magnets representing his family members that live far away. He has cousins in Michigan that he sees only once a year. He has grandparents that winter in Arizona. He has a sister away at college in Nebraska, who has the fantastic opportunity to travel around the country with several Husker sports teams, which also means she does not come home often. I needed my son to understand why he would not see these loved ones in person on a regular basis. I needed him to understand that even while there is a geographical distance separating us, these people are still his family members and he can use his map as means of staying connected with them.

When any one of our family members travel, my son gets to move them to their destination and then when they return, he moves them back home again. What an unwitting way to teach young children geography! I laugh at the time when he pointed to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and because it was the same color as the rest of the state, he knowingly told me, “Mom, that’s Michigan too”. I had to look close and scratch my head and think about it, before realizing, yes, my son had just taught me something. Perhaps I had learned that in elementary school and only temporarily forgotten, but I have to admit I was never that good with geography. With that in mind, there is definite irony that I am now creating these maps.

My son loves his map, when I would take it off his wall as I worked through the creative process of going into production, he would ask me where it was. It finally dawned on me I needed to explain to him that I was going to be making maps just like his for other boys and girls, too. His eyes got big and he said, “You are?” He thought that idea was pretty neat!

With the theme of Places to Go, People to See, and Ways to Get There, I wanted kids to use their maps in different ways. I included national landmarks and facts about them to get kids excited about learning about different places and potentially traveling to see them one day. I included people so that they could stay connected with loved ones. I included modes of transportation, because kids love playing with cars and planes. But the best part is the fact that the magnets can be customized. Actual pictures of their loved ones can be printed off and affixed over the generic images, making the map uniquely special to them. On my son’s map we have also have magnets representing vacation spots. My favorite is a picture of a sandcastle, bucket, and shovel positioned on Virginia Beach to help us hold on to the memories of that amazing family vacation.

The opportunities with the magnets are endless! How awesome would it be for a child to learn their states and capitals by placing the proper magnet on the map? And if you are a family that is sports-oriented, you can put your favorite teams on the map. Or, use the map to mark which states you have traveled to.
