My hands are little tattooed, nail-polished machines that stitch my imagination into existence.
Hi, I'm Gemma! I was born & raised in a little country town called Maffra. I spent my childhood roaming free in paddocks full of cows, swimming in rivers with horses and sleeping in soft piles of dogs & cats & mice. We even had a pet donkey. This is where my strong bond with the animal kingdom was first evoked. I have always been influenced by my visual surroundings, and ever since I was tiny & barely even a human yet, I have been creating art. I started out drawing, painting, & making silly little books for my parents & siblings. Later on, I discovered the joy of sculpting; giving physical shape to my imagination. I loved creating work that transcended a flat surface, making things that were tactile & meant to be touched and handled. I was well on the way to uncovering my second passion.
From age 14 – 21, I danced back and forth between the country and the city (finally settling in Melbourne in 2007) I manoeuvred my way through many artistic adventures, including my Bachelor of Visual Arts. Somewhere in the midst of it all, I realized my deep love of jewellery design. I’ve always loved things that were a little bit “different” when it comes to fashion and so I wanted to break out of the mold of traditional jewellery design. I needed to bring my two passions together – animals & jewellery – and create truly unique pieces to be worn by like-minded ladies. I began to live and breathe jewellery… seriously, I would exhale and a colourful burst of gems would fill the air… It was time to gather my tribe (surely i could lure them with my jewel encrusted breath!?)
In 2012, I launched my line of cruelty-free & vegan jewellery, made from at least 60% recycled materials. My pieces are colourful, textured, big and bold. Obviously, animals are a huge inspiration & the thing I care about most in the world. I want the power within these animals & other creatures that have crept out of my imagination to give young women the confidence to express themselves and stand out.
