About

A vintage love story - a decade in the making

It is hard to say where my love of vintage began. I imagine we all have stories of that beautiful family heirloom that was kept tucked away as it has been in the family for ages. Or even still, the constant reminders of vintage pieces around you: for me it was my grandmother's engagement ring which she wore everyday of her life. I don't remember a time when I would visit her that she wouldn't point to it and remind me that I would be inheriting this most prized possession when she passed. Those memories mixed with a younger version of myself (and probably yourself as well) tromping around in old heels that were hidden in the back of closets, WAY too big for my once tiny feet & adorning oneself with dresses that were worn to events long forgotten. Fast forward to teen me dashing out the door on my way to school in my dad's old bell bottoms or embroidered tunics. Throughout my life there has never been a division of vintage, love, life & wearable fashion, so I guess it is really no surprise that I find myself here among the sellers of etsy. Becoming a full time vintage shop owner was a long journey of a decade in the making and I will tell you, I fought it (non-intentionally) all along the way.

I got started selling vintage 10 years ago in college to make ends meet. I didn't have a lot of time for a normal job and I enjoyed the freedom, flexibility & the hunt of finding beautiful pieces and making some money along the way. eBay was new on the scene and on the up & up. I remember spending the last $50 in my bank account on a mannequin I found at a store closing sale and with my digital camera in tow started listing a few pieces I had collected along the way. And in a way, that is when the first spark of Cheshire was lit. Those few pieces sold providing me with some meals and a few dollars to go thrifting the next with. Every week, the cycle continued. Mind you, I didn't wake up one morning and think "hey, I'm just going to sell strictly vintage pieces" but did notice that when I went thrifting I naturally just gravitated towards them. After looking through racks and racks of crap, you just know something good when you see it, when you feel it, when you look at its construction and you know a whole lot of love went into making this garment as special as it is. Let's just be honest here, those pieces were ALWAYS vintage.

4 years later I graduated from college on time with zero debt and a 3.7 GPA. I moved back to Washington to be with my family & got a nice paying job right away with a large tech company. I continued selling vintage on the side as a hobby because I loved it but in no way believed it could ever support me and all the dreams I had for my life. It took me 3 years of white collar desk jobs to realize a steady paycheck & no debt but being unhappy every day i woke up & went to work didn't mean "living the dream". It took me another 1.5 years to realize doing all the work for someone else on making their vintage dreams come true didn't mean I was truly any closer to mine. 2 years later I realized that after 8 years in the business I knew a lot and I didn't need someone else to hold my hand or to compromise on my vision. I finally knew what I wanted & what I needed to do in order to make that happen. It took me 10 years to trust myself, let all my preconceived notions of success go & let my dream finally take flight.

I'll be honest, even after a decade of easing into owning a vintage shop, it took a lot of courage and a lot of guts to take that final, no going back plunge. In order for Cheshire to be born I had to quit my first job, break up with a business partner, go into debt, almost lose my home, take on large known financial responsibilities with unknown income, ask for help, lose some friends along the way & work harder than I ever had in my entire life - just to name a few. Yeah, I could have cut some corners and arrived here a little faster and maybe with a bit more money in my pocket but I wouldn't have learned nearly as much along the way or have fully trusted that I know what I'm doing. It feels great to finally be here though. I'm where I've needed to be, listened to my own calling and I'm loving each & every moment of it. And of course, I just have to say thank you for joining me in my adventure, whether it was just to read this story about me or if you've been a huge supporter from the start. I appreciate each & every one of you.

xoxo
