Originalmente de Gallup, NM, minha família é curadora de American Indian Jewelry há décadas. Da década de 1970 até o início dos anos 2000, meus pais e avós possuíam e operavam joias nativas americanas e lojas de presentes do sudoeste em todo o sudoeste dos Estados Unidos.
Se você estiver aqui em Tucson, você deve se lembrar das lojas no Tucson Mall, Foothills Mall, Park Place e os pequenos balcões de joias localizados nas lojas de departamento - bem ao lado das joias finas. :)
Eles não estavam apenas em Tucson, no entanto. Outras lojas de presentes estavam em Phoenix, Henderson, NV e San Diego, CA. Se você já visitou a Cidade Velha de San Diego na década de 1990, há uma boa chance de ter passado pelo Dodson's Corner; a fileira de lojas temáticas da minha família.
Após a aposentadoria, centenas de peças nativas americanas foram mantidas em nossa família. Fiquei especialmente surpreso ao saber quantos desses itens incríveis nunca viram a luz do dia; eles nunca foram colocados à venda em NENHUM de seus vários locais!
Para mim, há uma qualidade nostálgica em fazer isso. Lembro-me de conhecer pessoas de todo o mundo como um jovem adulto, trabalhando nas lojas da minha família. Adorei aprender sobre a história e o simbolismo por trás das peças. Sinto muita falta desses dias, mas me sinto muito grato por poder continuar uma parte da história da minha família através desta loja.
Agora que você conhece as origens do meu produto, aqui está um pouco sobre mim:
Em um esforço para estar mais em casa com meus filhos, fiz uma grande mudança de carreira. Compartilhar a custódia é um equilíbrio complicado, mas sempre tentei colocar minha família à frente da minha carreira. Então, depois de 8 anos na indústria de fitness, os últimos 4 dos quais passaram em um trabalho incrível como Gerente de Operações, tomei a difícil decisão de deixar tudo isso para trás e satisfazer uma curiosidade que sempre tive sobre me tornar um professor! Enquanto eu amo isso, eu definitivamente preciso complementar minha renda! Felizmente, sempre tive minhas joias.
Quando eu ficar sem minhas peças vintage, começarei a compartilhar minha coleção artesanal. Eu mesmo faço joias desde que eu era muito jovem. Tudo começou com a confecção de terços com meus colegas católicos na segunda série. Eu me apaixonei por miçangas e vendi muitas das minhas próprias peças nas lojas da minha família ao longo dos anos. Alguns têm sido difíceis de separar, mas é muito humilhante pensar que alguém gosta da minha criação o suficiente para usá-la! :)
Agora, estou casada novamente e estamos esperando animadamente nossa primeira filha (o primeiro filho do meu marido)!! Isso me deixa grato agora do que nunca por ter tomado a decisão de estar no Etsy. Se você chegou até aqui, obrigado por ler e ter um dia maravilhoso!
ATUALIZAÇÃO: Aquela menina que estávamos esperando agora tem DOIS anos de idade e está administrando a casa! Eu ainda estou ensinando, e passei de ensinar Kinder, para a segunda e agora terceira série. A vida é uma loucura com 3 filhos, variando de 2 a 14, mas eu não teria de outra maneira.
Originally from Gallup, NM, my family has been curating American Indian Jewelry for decades. From the 1970s through the early 2000s, my parents and grandparents owned and operated Native American jewelry and southwest gift shops throughout the southwestern United States.
If you’re here in Tucson, you may remember the stores in Tucson Mall, Foothills Mall, Park Place, and the little jewelry counters located in the department stores - right next to the fine jewelry. :)
They weren’t just in Tucson, however. Other gift shops were in Phoenix, Henderson, NV, and San Diego, CA. If you ever visited Old Town San Diego in the 1990s, there’s a good chance you made it past Dodson’s Corner; my family’s row of themed shops.
Upon retirement, hundreds of Native American pieces have been kept in our family. I was especially surprised to learn just how many of these incredible items have never even seen the light of day; they were never put out for sale in ANY of their several locations!
For me, there’s a nostalgic quality to doing this. I recall meeting people from all over the world as a young adult, working in my family’s shops. I loved learning about the history and symbolism behind the pieces. I miss those days dearly, but feel so grateful to be able to carry on a portion of my family’s history through this shop.
Now that you know the origins of my product, here's a bit about me:
In an effort to be home with my kids more, I made a major career switch. Sharing custody is a tricky balance, but I have always tried to put my family ahead of my career. So, after 8 years in the fitness industry, the last 4 of which spent in an amazing job as an Operations Manager, I made the difficult decision to leave all of that behind, and fulfill a curiosity I've always had about becoming a teacher! While I love it, I definitely need to supplement my income! Thankfully, I have always had my jewelry.
When I run out of my vintage pieces, I'll begin sharing my handmade collection. I've been making jewelry myself since I was very young. It all started with making rosaries with my Catholic schoolmates in the second grade. I fell in love with beading, and have sold many of my own pieces in my family's shops over the years. Some have been difficult to part with, but it is pretty humbling to think that someone likes my creation enough to wear it! :)
Now, I am remarried and we are excitedly expecting our first girl (my husband's first child)!! This makes me grateful more now than ever that I made the decision to be on Etsy. If you got this far, thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!
UPDATE: That baby girl we were expecting is now TWO years old and running the house! I am still teaching, and have moved from teaching Kinder, to second, and now third grade. Life is crazy with 3 kids, ranging from 2 to 14, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
