Turquoise Trading Post
Una visita casual a una rock shop a lo largo de la Interestatal 10 en Nuevo México en el siglo pasado produjo un colector de especímenes de Rockhound y minerales. Después de comprar un par de piezas de color turquesa en bruto y recolectar amatista de la famosa mina Four Peaks, siguió un interés en el lapidario y comencé a cortar piedras como pasatiempo. Eventualmente, la orfebrería siguió, y después de tomar una clase de joyería inicial, las piedras cortadas se convirtieron en joyas terminadas. Esto también llevó a un interés en la recolección de joyas vintage, principalmente del suroeste de los Estados Unidos y México. El proceso de fabricación y recolección de gemas y joyas ha continuado desde entonces.
La idea de Turquoise Trading Post es anterior a Etsy, y el concepto original se centró en las joyas hechas en mi propia tienda y las piedras preciosas cortadas en la tienda. Pero coleccionar joyas también ha excedido mi capacidad, y se adquiere más todo el tiempo. Siempre un comerciante, soy propenso a regodearme en cualquier objeto de metal brillante o piedra bonita, o cualquier otro material que pueda producir uno u otro o alguna combinación de los mismos. Todo es de cortesía... cortar piedras y construir joyas ayuda a reconocer el diseño y la construcción de calidad en piezas vintage terminadas, y la recolección de piezas de calidad vintage inspira el proceso de diseño y enseña sobre estética visual, usabilidad, durabilidad y atención al detalle.
Actualmente, la tienda de Etsy está más centrada en la joyería vintage para coleccionistas y para usar, y suministros de piedras preciosas para otras almas creativas. Las gemas de Cabujón que se ofrecen son una combinación de piedras cortadas por mí y piedras cortadas por otros para la venta como suministros. Las piedras preciosas facetadas son principalmente piedras nuevas cortadas con precisión en Sri Lanka a partir de cristales de gemas seleccionados a mano (o a veces recolectados) por mí. A chance visit to a Rock Shop along Interstate 10 in New Mexico back in the last century produced a Rockhound and mineral specimen collector. After purchasing a couple of pieces of turquoise rough, and collecting Amethyst from the famous Four Peaks Mine, an interest in lapidary followed and I began cutting stones as a hobby. Eventually silversmithing followed, and after taking a beginning jewelry class, cut stones became finished jewelry. This also led to an interest in collecting vintage jewelry - primarily from the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. The process of making and collecting gems and jewelry has continued ever since.
The idea for Turquoise Trading Post long pre-dates Etsy, and the original concept focused on jewelry made in my own shop, and gemstones cut in the shop. But collecting jewelry also has exceeded my capacity, and more is acquired all the time. Always a trader, I am apt to glom onto any shiny metal object or pretty stone, or any other materials that may produce one or the other or some combination thereof. The Etsy shop is now a hobby in itself, helping to support other my lapidary, silversmithing, and jewelry collecting hobbies.
It is all complimentary... cutting stones and building jewelry aids in recognizing quality design and construction in finished vintage pieces, and collecting vintage quality pieces inspires the design process and teaches about visual asthetics, wearability, durability, and an attention to detail.
Currently, the Etsy shop is more focused on vintage jewelry for collectors and for wearing, and gemstone supplies for other creative souls. Cabochon gems offered are a combination of both stones cut by me, and stones cut by others for sale as supplies. Faceted gemstones are primarily new stones precision cut in Sri Lanka from gem crystals hand selected (or sometimes collected) by me. Over time, I hope to add more finished handmade jewelry, but the shop may have virtually anything in it from gem lapidary rough to finished gemstones to beads and findings to vintage jewelry from the southwest U.S., Mexico, and the four corners of the globe.
