Tyroll Forge was established in 1985 in a small space in a granary/machine shed on a former small Wisconsin Farm. Needing much more space, especially head room and climate control, a twenty five year long remodeling of the main Barn into a real Shop commenced in 1990 and is still in progress. The current Shop space is reduced to the Silo in warm weather and inside living room of home in the Winter. Forging hot steel in the living room on a sophisticated British Cutler's Anvil, we carry on the tradition of the 'Little Mester' of olde Sheffield England fame. Only real difference is I do not burn coal in my living room, preferring a gas forge for this.

Currently, the very small shop necessitates limiting work to one size stock, 1/4" round, which was selected for versatility and user friendliness. Hooks and other Forged items made from square stock are rough in appearance and hard on clothing, pan handle finish and sharp to bump into, etc. Paint tends to chip from the edges of square stock. Round stock must be treated differently than square to avoid unsightly, distracting hammer marks and other dents. Specialized tooling is required for each step that would otherwise be typically pounded out on square stock with Hammer and Anvil.

In addition to specialized round stock compatible tooling, the Artisanal works produced at Tyroll Forge involve ambidexterity of the Smith, resulting in much more lifelike forms avoiding the typical unintended helical effect pure right handed hammering yields.

The Forged Penny End scroll, found on all of Tyroll Forge hooks and in many others of our designs is the most technically challenging of the scroll end variants. Forged of round stock, this scroll end is so difficult to work with, it is unique, a signature of our Forge. In addition to being the most aesthetically pleasing scroll end it is also the safest and least obtrusive in function. Not prone to snagging clothes, entangling hair, damaging pan handle finish or being damaged in use, the penny end scroll is far and away the best form of modern classy iron work. Makes most all other iron work look amateur and insubstantial.

In addition, every detail of the Artisanal Works produced out here is engineered to perfection of form; fit to duty. Pound-in 'J' hooks, for example have spike portion designed to not split mounting board by having only the point sharp and wedge shaped and the main part square but not tapering. (Typical pound in hooks are wedge shaped the whole length, practically guaranteeing a split mounting board, even with a drilled starting hole.)

Another of many improvements over the prior Art are the precisely shaped holes in the Ironwork for mounting. These are intended to be matched with bugle headed screws, commonly referred to as 'sheet rock' type screws. Typically these holes are drilled and drill countersunk, which does not match the bugle screw head. Especially with hand forged items, the typical mis-match of screw and almost-but-not-quite-right countersunk hole causes screw failure on tightening.

Each week or so we come up with a new product. This is developed from idea through drawing to tooling then making and refining a hundred examples to accurately nail down form, procedure and resulting costs. Often, there comes a complete change over of design, which results in a discontinued batch or line and hence a close out special, worth looking for as they cost half and are perfectly functional. Our discontinued items are usually better quality than others' wares only issue is style.
