About

One cold day can change everything

I started knitting nine years ago, when my husband and I relocated to New England from sunny Florida. One blustery October day I had a stunning realization: that day was as cold as the coldest winter day in Florida...and it was only October. A little fear overtook me when I started to think about what February in New England was like. On my way home from work that day I stopped at the store buying needles, yarn and a little booklet. I curled up on the couch for the next 12 hours, and knit a scarf to wear to work the next day. I haven't stopped since.

Like any good hobby, knitting allows me to explore my interests while continually providing a challenge. I've branched out into hand dyeing yarn, spinning yarn on Adina, my Polish castle wheel, and learning to weave on my rigid heddle loom.

Thanks to my customers, my shop has taken a turn in the direction of including photography props. Please feel free to convo me with any suggestions or ideas for special orders. I'd love to help!

Hi, and welcome to Ugly Duckling Yarn! I am a knitter, spinner and dyer, and find the fiber arts a true home for me. Here at the store you will find yarns dyed with non-toxic acid dyes (the acid being vinegar!). I hope to bring natural dyes in during the coming months, as well. All my yarn is hand-dyed in small batches, so even though colorways will be repeated, every dyelot will vary slightly.

I originally started dyeing yarn for longies and shorties--cloth diaper covers--at the request of friends. Here, you will find some of the more popular colorways of theirs, as well as some newly created ones. Many are even self-striping, creating fun patterns for kiddos.

CUSTOM ORDERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME! Just contact me and we can start discussing colors.
