The Story Behind Uniquely.B.You.Tiful..

Someone told me one time many years ago that they were surprised that I liked wearing rings and jewelry, seeing as how it would draw attention to my hands. Over the years, I admit, there have been times when I've hidden them away as best as I could to avoid stares or the awkwardness of someone wanting to ask questions but not wanting to seem rude or insulting.

You see, I was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome which left me with most fingers never developing beyond the first knuckle and missing fingernails. They also bear the scars of surgical separation because they were webbed at birth and the resulting skin grafts. ABS also left me with webbed toes (still) on my left foot and to require a prosthetic leg on the right side because my foot didn't develop beyong the ankle.

I had gotten back into beading and making jewelry as a hobby in the spring of 2015 when that comment came back to me. I had put on a newly crafted ring and sat taking pictures of it to share with my family and friends on facebook, In doing so, I also took a moment to look at my hands in those pictures. At first I reconsidered posting the pictures with the ring on my hand... maybe I could just lay it on a surface and that would look better than posting a picture of my scarred hands online.

I felt sad for a moment, remembering the comment, thinking of all the beautiful hand-modeled pictures that I had seen on various websites and in shops. For a moment though, I looked back to the ring and considered the talent that God had given me with these hands. I still had amazing dexterity to handle fine wires, beads and tools and the creativity to make them into something beautiful that I wanted to share. And so, though I had been hesitant at first, I celebrated posting that first picture. My hands are unique and capable in spite of the scars and oddities, and so, Uniquely.B.You.Tiful was born.

So I will continue to craft, and.. I'll share my creations with any who might want them. I want others, young and old who might share my condition or others to know you don't have to hide your hands.. or any part of yourself.. away. You don't have to be ashamed of the uniqueness with which God blessed you. Wear whatever jewelry you want and show it off, celebrate your beauty and set it to flight. Be happy.. be YOU. We're all uniquely beautiful.

****As a way of giving back and helping families affected by ABS, 10% of each sale in my shop will be donated to the Shriner's Hospital to help provide medical and rehabilitative service for children whose families are unable to pay.****

Welcome to Uniquely B Youtiful Designs! My shop is transitioning from being a jewelry store, to include more of my artwork. Soon, you will find not only the jewelry that you have loved, but paintings, digital products and more!

Having been born with amniotic band syndrome, I have been an amputee from birth. Complications with my prosthesis, along with some other "health stuff" left me on crutches or in a wheelchair, making my normal job nearly impossible, and so UniquelyBYouTiful was born! My hands may look very different from the hands of others due to the amniotic bands, but they are capable of beautiful, unique work, which I absolutely LOVE to share. Be sure to add me to your favorites to keep up-to-date with my latest creations.
