Over a period of many years, I could not find good comfortable pants to fit my needs, and my hinder. I happened upon a Simplicity pantsuit pattern from the 70s that was my sisters. It had no side seams. This intrigued me, as I had identified side seams (particularly side seam pockets) as the culprit for many an unflattering silhouette. So, I tried sewing these pants with some rib knit fabric. I felt up to the task because there was literally one piece to this pattern. And boy howdy, they worked!
Coinciding with this time period, my fascination with sleepwear from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s began in earnest. It is stretchy and hugs curves. It is cut on the bias. Fabric is like water when cut on the bias - it flows.
So I thought: why not pants? And why not try them with this linen damask tablecloth I got from the thrift store? And then, why not dye them!? And thus the birth of Universal Pants one little curious step at a time.
I still use tablecloths, vintage, thrift store, and garage sale fabrics, plus fine linen, beautiful silks, rayon, cotton, and wool. I'll use just about anything! I still dye a lot of them, too. And for the moment, every pair is still hand-made.
