I bought this for myself, but gave it as a birthday present. Now I have to get another one for myself. May just stock up!

Bought 2 covers and gave one to a friend for her birthday. We call them our iPhone sleeping bags!

Making New from Old

When I changed jobs from being a rural health advocate to work on protecting my community from a proposed coal plant, I began to look even harder at how my family uses energy, where our food comes from, how it is grown, and how to use less "stuff". I don't mean spartan living without electricity and running water, but a way of doing better with what we use.

In the spring of 2011 during radiation treatments for cancer, I decided that I had to find a way to do something for myself. It didn't have to be "big", but a way to spend time doing something that I could lose myself in for a little while. It was time to dust off my sewing machine.

One scarf made from a reclaimed thrift store sweater led to another. On a bitter cold day while hunting for more sweaters in a thrift store, I sold the scarf I was wearing, and the light came on.

I hope that Upcycled 2 You is a reflection of my passion for a healthier world where there is less waste, and new purpose found in what was once thought to be useless.

Upcycled 2 You FAQS

1. What are upcycled sweaters and why do you use them?
Upcycled sweaters are thrift store finds (or cast offs from friends) which still have life in them, they just need a new purpose. All sweaters are washed in hot water with a hypo-allergenic detergent, and then dried on the hottest dryer setting until the sweater shrinks and felts. Shetland wool, ragg, and bulky sweaters are perfect for e-gadget covers, heavier winter scarves, koozies, coasters, toasty warm fingerless gloves.

Cashmere and merino wool usually remain soft after felting and feel good against the skin. These lighter weight sweaters are great for scarves and fingerless gloves. I also use them for e-gadget covers but may also add a layer of flannel for added thickness.

2. Will an e-gadget cover work with the skin or shell I already have?
Felted sweaters will stretch some so most slim hard shells for iPhones, Smart Phones, iPads, tablets, and iPods should fit into an Upcycled 2 You cover. Sizes are included with each product description. Please convo me if you see a cover you want in a different size. If there is enough material available I will gladly make one for you as a custom order.

3. The care and feeding of your Upcycled 2 You accessory
All items come with fabric content and care instructions. Most should be spot cleaned or hand washed in cold water. Risk takers (you know who you are) may opt to place their scarves, e-gadget covers, fingerless gloves, etc. in a lingerie bag and wash with other similarly colored laundry in cold water. All items should be reshaped after washing and allowed to air dry.

4. Nothing in life is certain
Upcycled 2 You e-gadget covers are guaranteed to give your electronic accessory eco-fashionista style, but they are not guaranteed to protect your electronic friend against damage. The cover should help reduce scratches under normal use.

5. Upcycled 2 You Workshop
All items are made in a smoke free and cat free environment. I have three short hair rescued dogs (who spend time sleeping under my sewing table). If you are highly allergic to dogs, I can gladly have your item washed and dried or dry cleaned elsewhere (there will be a small additional cost).
