I love love Erin's creativity and her spirit. This fishy is a precious piece of fun-loving art to me, and the story behind it is as precious as the piece itself. She truly embodies the spirit of Etsy, and I appreciate her.

About

sick of drawing, time to bead!

I love drawing, don't get me wrong, but since I discovered the world of bead embroidery and bead weaving, I can't get enough!

Born in the city of Detroit and raised in the nearby suburbs, I always knew an urban environment. I grew up an only child to an amazing seamstress / mathematician mother. She had an obsessive style of quilting, embroidering, sewing, and coffee drinking. I was given art supplies to draw and paint with while I watched her work with fibers.

Primarily self taught, my art began early on. It wasn't until college when I decided to pursue a traditional art education. I took classes at the local art school, the community college and eventually earned my degree from Wayne State University in drawing the human figure.

Aside from my formal education in the two dimensional arts, I dabbled in beading and wire wrapping when I was younger. I attended a Jewish camp growing up where I learned to weave daisy chains. Eventually I taught arts and crafts at this same camp where I made ceramic beads, and other interesting crafts myself and with the kids.

After college, a friend and I started small little business where we made wire wrapped jewelry (mostly earrings), and sold them at a local art fair. We tried a few more fairs and eventually she went on to get a "real job" while I continued drawing and jewelry making.

These days, I sell my illustrations on ebay, while spending the rest of my time beading. It all started when I purchased a bead embroidered headband over a year ago. I took it apart with my mind (not for real, I still have and love it), in order to learn how it was made. I made a few rough attempts at the style of embroidery and eventually had to seek help. Through books, youtube, and experimentation, I learned advanced bead weaving and bead embroidery techniques.

Now, the experimentation has turned to obsession. I can't stop beading. Because my mothers days of sewing are over (arthritis, and poor eyesight) she decided to pass on her massive overload of supplies. I've inherited the "mother load" of fabrics, threads, sewing machine, needles, and various exciting vintage findings (buttons, closures, snaps, and other interesting finds). Even the smell of the fabrics reminds me of watching my mother obsessively sew my Halloween costumes and dance leotards when I was little.

Today, I live in the city of Detroit with many reptile friends, while working out of my art studio in Ferndale, Michigan (a nearby suburb). My mornings consist of feeding my lovely bearded dragons, then sitting down to bead, while watching and interacting with them. I go to the studio in the evenings to draw and list on ebay. I still find the time to sneak in some more beading after that!

Additional policies and FAQs
I only use "reclaimed" leather in my jewelry designs. I prefer to buy and rip up an old jacket or other leather garment from the thrift stores, than to buy leather directly from a source who contributes moneys to poachers. Although I am still using leather in my creations and this may contribute indirectly to the harm of animals, I believe firmly that these garments at the thrift store are better off being recycled than sitting collecting dust. I feel we are obligated to put this type of material to its best and fullest use, rather than throwing it away again. In this way, I upcycle the material and put it back into use.
