The story behind Valérie Pelletier, ceramist
After taking a few sessions of ceramics courses in leisure, I took the plunge when I left my job and enrolled in Craft Technique at the Bonsecours Ceramics Centre to devote myself to learning ceramics full-time. During these three years, I was able to refine my technique and I was able to acquire skills in turning, shaping and molding.
As a result of my studies, in 2019, I created my company that is mainly dedicated to the creation of utilitarian ceramic art objects for tableware and decoration. All the pieces are entirely handmade, in a potter's wheel, in my workshop in Montreal.
My work evokes simplicity and sobriety and the choice of forms is part of a refined and minimalist aesthetic. I offer two complementary and timeless collections. One with a speckled beige sandstone and the other, with a dark sandstone. All pieces in both collections have pale blue enamel. This blue brings depth to the pieces and absorbs us with its brilliance and transparency. Thus, I wanted to create an interesting contrast between the natural side of the bare earth and the rather shiny enamel. Paying particular attention to the technique, I still want to keep track of the human, which recalls the artisanal work done by hand.
A native of Lac-Saint-Jean, I am inspired by my native region. With its pale blue and shiny enamel, my ceramic recalls the luminous sky reflecting on the lake, bordered by its vast banks of soft sand.
Finally, I want to touch people by transmitting to them, through my ceramics, the sensitivity and pleasure that the work of clay provokes in me.
After completing three years of studies at the Bonsecours Ceramics Center, I created, in 2019, my small company that is mainly dedicated to the creation of utilitarian ceramic art objects for tableware and decoration.
