About

VaVaStory

It only took me 30-odd years, but I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. And this is it - owning my own mens neckwear business and bringing a splash of colour in to wardrobes all over the world.

There is just me, Dan, behind the scenes - I select and order fabrics, choose designs and colours, photograph, promote, ship and, of course, sew. I've been sewing professionally for several years now ans whilst I'm pretty much self-taught, sewing and creating runs in my family. My gran taught be the very basics when I was knee-high to a grasshopper and she in turn had been taught be her grandmother who was a Court dressmaker.

I'm currently based in a small, historic market town called Hadleigh, in Suffolk, England, which is where I was born and spent my first few years as a wee nipper. Hadleigh and other towns in Suffolk made their fortunes in the Middle Ages through the wool trade (including weaving), a then vital part of England's economy. It was this weaving knowledge and infrastructure that led to the London-based silk weaving companies moving out this way in the 19th century and establishing some of the mills that are still in existence today. The London based mills, in turn, had been established in the 18th century by French Huguenots fleeing persecution in France. If you ever find yourself wandering around the Shoreditch area of London, for example, you can still see traces of their existence in the names of pubs and in some of the extra-tall windows, designed to let in as much daylight as possible for the weavers.

............................................

I only use the very best materials I can find to make my bow ties and ties and refuse to skimp on the details and things you may not see - all my bow ties are interlined with silk, for example, whilst all my ties are interlined with pure wool. Of course, there's the silk itself - the very best quality English silk, which, along with Italian silk, is the best in the world. And to sew silk, I only use silk thread, both in the machine work and in the handwork.

Each bow tie and necktie takes 2 or so hours to make, from start to finish, as I like to take my time to ensure the best result, from how I place the pattern pieces before cutting, to the careful pressing after the sewing,, to handsewing the neckties together after pressing, to the hand finishing. I don't believe in rush jobs and sloppy work.

............................................

Getting to this point in my life has been an amazing journey - I studied Law at university, but found it wasn't a good fit and ended up moving to San Francisco when I was 24...I have dual UK/US citizenship and wanted to be nearer my Dad. After getting clean and sober a few months after arriving, I got in to customising Barbie dolls and through years of dedication and hard work became one of the top artists in that field (you can find my work over on WideEyedGirls.com).

Through working on dolls, I was introduced to the silk mills here in Suffolk, England and found that tie silks were perfect for making doll clothes. And the trips to the mills also opened my eyes to the amazing colours and patterns that could be woven for men's ties.

In 2010, after being diagnose HIV+, I decided to move back to the UK. Crippled with clinical depression, I started clawing my way out of the depths by making project bags for knitters made from the tie silks mentioned above as a way to get my creative mojo back. During that time, I knew I wanted to start making bow ties, as I'd started wearing them myself a couple of years previous, but it took me months to find the right sort of findings for the adjustment system - many of the bow tie findings on Etsy are fine for cotton, but snag on silk. Once I finally had tracked them down, I was at last able to start realising this dream, and from there it's been a step-by-step process to get to the point where I have started having silks woven exlcusively for me and to have a brand/selection of which I'm very proud.

And, if you've gotten this far and are still curious, 'VaVa' is named after my little sister, Sarah. When I was a wee young lad, I couldn't pronounce her name properly and it would come out as Vava (rhymes with car).

----------**********----------

A passion for dressing well, beautiful fabrics, textures and colour has culminated in the pure silk ties and bowties I'm proud to be offering on Etsy.

There's really no other fibre quite like silk - smooth and sensuous to the touch, it glows with life. I only use the world's finest tie silks, woven at a local silk mill that has been weaving in the UK since the 18th century, together with the very best findings and notions that I source from around the world. All bow ties are interlined with pure silk habotai and all neckties are interlined with pure wool, for a professional, luxurious hand.

My ties are dry clean only. They can be carefully steam-pressed back in to shape - I hover the iron (with the steam setting on) just above the fabric and then immediately smooth out with my fingers. The iron plate should never be brought into direct contact with the silk as it can damage the fibres.

If you have never tied a bow tie before, it's much easier than it may seem - it's exactly the same method as tying shoelaces and there plenty of excellent tutorials to be found on the internet to help you attain the perfect (or imperfect!) bow.

A note on tie lengths:

59" is the standard length I offer and is most similar to the length if ties you will find in the shops.

63" is the length I wear, being a 6'1 chap with a 17" neck, as it allows me to tie a windsor knot, which is my favourite.

67" would be ideal for chaps who are taller than average, or with a larger than average neck measurement.

Of course, if you'd like something shorter, in between or longer (up to 70"), I'm happy to accomodate your request.

Shipping
Please note, Royal Mail Last Posting Dates for Christmas 2014 for standard air mail have now passed. I always ship via Royal Mail International Signed For and/or Tracked (depending on destination), which are slightly faster services, but I can't make any guarantees as to whether international orders will now arrive in time for Christmas. Full tracking is available to the US, so you would be able to follow its progress and thus know if it'll be there on time. The only way I can guarantee delivery for Christmas to overseas customers is by Fed-Ex, which takes 24 to 72 hours from my door to yours. Should you have any questions, feel free to drop me a message through Etsy, or via email - VaVaNeckwear [!at] gmail.com

International mail to outside the EU usually takes an average of 8 working days though it can take longer if there is a delay in Customs processing, so please allow up to six weeks for your package to arrive, though this is a rare exception. Sometimes it can be faster - I've known packages arrive in the US 4 days after I've posted them. Shipping within the EU generally takes around 7 days, though, again, there is no guaranteed time frame for delivery.

Should you need your order in a hurry, I can send via Fed-Ex for guaranteed door-to-door delivery in 24 to 72 hours - there is the option to upgrade to this service on each listing.

All items are covered in case of loss or damage, and you will be free to choose either a replacement or a full refund including shipping.

Customer is liable for any and all import duties, customs fees and related charges. I do not falsify Customs declarations.

If you have any questions about shipping, please don't hesitate to drop me a line.
Refunds and Exchanges
Your satisfaction with my products is of the utmost importance to me. If you are dissatisfied, for any reason, with your purchase, you are welcome to return it in unused condition (hangtags must still be intact & not removed), for a full refund or exchange.

Returns from Customers within the EU - Please notify me if any returns within 14 days of receiving your purchase(s). Goods must be returned within 14 days of your initial notification. Once I have received the goods back, a full refund including original shipping will be made within 14 days. The cost of returning the goods is to be borne by the customer, except in instances of damaged/faulty items.

Returns from Customers outside the EU (European Union) - Please notify me if any returns within 14 days of receiving your purchase(s). Goods must be returned within 14 days of your initial notification. Once I have received the goods back, a refund including original shipping will be made within 14 days. The cost of returning the goods is to be borne by the customer, except in instances of damaged/faulty items.

Any returns from outside the EU must be clearly marked as 'Returned Merchandise - Returning to Country of Origin' and on the Customs form, make sure to check 'Other' or 'Return to Origin' (any box marked 'Merchandise' should not be checked). In addition, the CN-22 customs form that I filled out and that was attached to your package should ideally be re-attached to the package you are returning. This is so that UK Customs will not charge me VAT at 20% plus the £8 handling fee, which are applied to non-EU goods purchased by UK residents. In such an instance, I must unfortunately reserve the right to refuse the package and it will be returned to sender.
Additional policies and FAQs
I love custom orders, so please don't hesitate to contact me if you're looking to order several ties for a wedding party, or a tie for yourself in different dimensions to those I currently offer.

I happily accomodate and welcome all wedding orders, including weddings for same-sex couples.

Some designs in my shop can be specially ordered in small amounts, woven in colours of your choosing from the mill's palette. The mill also has a huge design archive, so please don't feel limited to patterns you see in my shop as I'd be happy to hunt something down for you. This is your opportunity to make your event even more unique, with ties or bowties that quite possibly don't exist anywhere else in the world. A minimum order of 9 bow ties or 6 ties required for this service.

Due to the lead time on having silk woven, I am unable to accomodate last minute rush orders for this service - I would recommend a lead time of at least 3 months, to allow time for us to bounce around ideas, for me to research, order, wait for delivery & to then make up your ties/bowties.

Prices for bowties made from cloth woven to your specifications start at £70 and neckties start at £95.

Of course, I do also happily accomodate custom orders of products I already have available in my shop. Turnaround time on larger custom orders from the selection I have in my shop is 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the size of the order. Rush orders for this service can be done for an extra charge. Shipping times can vary, so if you need your order by a certain date there are various methods of shipping that shoud ensure your order will arrive in time. Depending on how soon you need it, I can offer the best shipping options for you.

Please don't hesitate to contact me for further information on any of the above options.

I do also offer a swatch service (depending on fabric availability), as nothing beats actually touching the silk & seeing the colours with the naked eye. The swatch service costs £4 (including shipping anywhere in the world). Please send me a message if you'd like a swatch & I can set up a custom order for you.

And if your question isn't answered here, just send me a messsage & I'll get right back to you.
