a labor of love
Hi! My name is Kelsey, and I am the owner of SunRipenedVintage, thank you for your interest in my shop and taking the time to find out a little more about it!
I officially began this little labor of love in 2010, though it’s arguable it’s been a lifetime coming! I grew up in the 90s, back when “thrifting” was not yet a verb. Growing up I would go to garage sales and thrift stores with my bargain-hunting mom trying to find castoffs that would pass as current in an effort to pinch pennies. My mom loved these little treasure hunts but being a kid there was a certain amount of shame involved in wearing someone else’s leftovers. When high school came around my mom taught me the basics of the sewing machine and my thrift store shopping strategy changed from trying to find the most relevant trends to searching out old and funky prints and tees and altering them to one-of-a-kind pieces. Even though back then I was essentially looking for “vintage” I still had no idea to call it that yet!
Today, I fully appreciate the art of the hunt and am shameless on my quest to find great vintage pieces! I am my mother's daughter! I love the feeling when you find an amazing piece and your heart starts racing – it’s seriously an adrenaline rush! I have grown to love vintage clothing for the three stories they tell: one about the time period in which they were made, one about the person or company who designed them, and one about the people who have worn them since. Often when I’m photographing an item I catch myself daydreaming about the first person who owned it. Is that crazy?
The biggest thrill for me is when the pieces I pick find a new home. I get such a kick out of picturing a girl in Texas wearing the boots I found or a girl in London wearing the cashmere sweater I sent or a guy in Australia rocking the 1960s swim trunks I picked. I love when a buyer messages me to tell me what they are purchasing the piece for – costumes, weddings, proms, I’ve heard it all! My favorite thing is getting a picture of the buyer wearing the piece – so awesome! That one is a total day-maker!
Again, thank you for taking the time to check out SunRipenedVintage and being interested in my passion for this space, I hope that passion is conveyed from start to finish in your shopping experience! That is my number one aim!
