When your passion is fèves...

One of the most vivid memories that I have of my mother, who passed away when I was just 5, is of baking an Epiphany Cake - and then being delighted to find the fève. What 5 year-old doesn't love to be King for a day! I had completely forgotten about the epiphany tradition until I stumbled across a box of fèves at a Paris Flea Market - the memories came pouring back and I fell in love with these tiny treasures. Upon our return home we had a hard time finding out more information, especially with my poor language skills. There wasn't a collectors group or single resource for buying or learning more about fèves here in the US.

After selling fèves and santons on Etsy for a year - we realized there was an avid collector base here and that the time was ripe for a collector site! ValueARTifacts on Etsy and Fevecollector.com are my escape and excuse! Selecting items, designing listings and building the store is a treasured escape from my very corporate job with a Consumer Package Goods company. And its also my excuse to buy and import all sorts of fun goodies. When my husband says - "What did you buy now?" - the answer is always "Its for the store!"

I love fèves! With my family I enjoy creating and modify customs to suit us personally, I feel these rituals and traditions are what bind us together as a family. There are so many fun things we do with fèves. We use them as rewards in our household; when my son was brave enough to perform a guitar solo in front of the entire school, he got a guitar fèves. When he earned his black belt in karate he got a tiny Asian Temple fève. He treasures these and knows exactly how he earned each one!

I also love the tiny nativity figures or Santons. During the French Revolution when churches were forcibly closed and life size nativities were outlawed, the dedicated french simply shrunk their nativities to a more personal and easily hidden size. No one was going to tell them they couldn't celebrate the birth of Christ exactly as they wanted!

Frequently asked questions
Are Feves food safe

All the newer feves (1980 and newer) are food safe, by European Standards, which are stricter than US food safety laws.

Anything labeled as a "vintage" feve - is questionable. Many of these older feves were made by smaller bakeries or businesses and it is unknown if they used lead-free glaze. Even though the lead from a tiny feve would be miniscule, I would probably not bake with the vintage feves.

Sizing details

Feves are small! Designed to fit on a fork and be hidden inside a cake. Most feves are smaller than 1.5" (4cm). Please see the ruler in the photos for perspective and size.

Are these suitable for use in a doll house?

Absolutely - Many collectors use them for just that purpose. However this isn't what they were originally designed for, so please check the ruler and size carefully; some feves are better for 1/12 scale and others for 1/6 scale. If you do buy something only to discover that the scale is off, no worries - everything is returnable.

Caution - Choking Hazard

Two cautions:
1)These are small and definitely a choking hazard for small children. Not suitable for small children.
2) If you are introducing the King Cake tradition, and hiding a feve inside - make certain everyone knows there is a tiny, NOT TO BE EATEN treasure hidden inside. You don't want a guest to unknowingly chomp down on a feve or choke.

Can you adjust the custom declaration to show a lower cost?

No. This is a federal offense. Although I'd love your order, I won't break the law for it. The purchaser is responsible for the payment of all fees, duties and taxes.

UK Customers: Please look up your customs regulations carefully. You seem to have the most expensive taxes and duties and the most erratic assessment of fees. Generally, but not always, if the order total (shipping and item cost) is under £25, there are no duties or taxes levied. I wish I could tell you exactly the total amount you can order - but it seems to depend a bit on that particular agent's mood that day. I have sent £100 packages with no additional fees, and other times a £20 package has been taxed.

If I mark the item as a "gift", shouldn't it show no cost on the customs forms?

No! You have paid me for the item, and that is the price I am required by law to put on the customs forms. I can include a gift receipt inside the package, but the cost of the item must be included on the customs documents. There is a lot of confusion about this, but the law is clear. Even if you have purchased the item as a gift for your cousin in Peru, the seller must put the purchased cost of that item on the documents.

How are the feves shipped?

The feves are placed in a ziploc bag, wrapped in tissue and shipped in a super sturdy box. Most orders come in white "Indestructo" double walled boxes that you can literally stand on! I have shipped over 25,000 orders and these boxes are awesome. My regular customers get excited when they recognize one of my boxes in their mailbox! Very large or retail orders will ship in heavy duty cardboard boxes.

Custom and personalized orders

Sorry, Feves are manufactured once a year and each design is only made for one epiphany season. So, it isn't possible to alter a design or make just one. If you are large bakery or retailer, the minimum quantity is 2500 pcs.

International Shipping Costs

Occasionally the shipping calculator for international shipping charges increases too rapidly. Unless you are buying 100s of feves, the shipping price will almost always be under $25. If you over pay by more than $2 over the actual shipping cost - I will refund you! If you want to confirm actual shipping costs before you place your order - feel free to send me an email asking for a shipping total ( please send me a list of what you intend to buy - I have no way to view what's in your cart)

International Customs, Duty and Taxes

As the buyer, you are responsible for paying any customs charges, duties or taxes on your package. I have no way of knowing what these amounts will be. If you refuse the package because of these charges, I will follow your countries laws regarding refunding you. But I will not ship to you again. As a small business owner, I simply can not afford to run a business like this.
