Greetings from Barcelona!

Barcelona, Spain

Announcement    Hello and happy autumn!
Summer is sadly over in Barcelona, but I'm super excited for this season's moderate temperatures and loooong shadows that always mesmerise me. I'm looking forward to to walking and collecting images in my mind, on paper and with my camera for future painting projects. Most of the paintings I have painted of the city were done or conceived in the fall due to the beautiful and dramatic light this time of the year. Join me as I create and add more paintings to my shop!

I’m a painter born in Sarajevo, I lived most of my life in Vancouver, Canada and have settled in Barcelona four years ago. I paint mostly in oil on wood panels or stretched canvas, and I sketch mostly in Gouache as it allows me to use colour in much the same way while it is easy to take anywhere.

I’ve been drawing and painting since I can remember. I always knew this was what I was meant to be doing. I drew my way into friendships, kids publications, art camps when I was young, then I decided to go to Art school. I graduated from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada. I also attended a Costuming for Film and Theatre program which allowed me to work in Film for about 10 years. I tried exploring different creative outlets while making a living. Finally in 2016 I moved to Barcelona where I can dedicate my time to painting, sketching and drawing.

I paint what I see around me. Right now, the city draws me with its hidden scenes, often neglected, yet beautiful. I find that we often look without seeing and our attention span is getting shorter as we get used to be fed quick images from social media. Through my painting I try to bring these hidden scenes as images into the foreground and show off their significance, their beauty.

Artist Statement and Bio

ARTIST STATEMENT

Living in a world completely dominated by the perfectly curated selfie, where reality is replaced by trends and information is obtained from social media, I feel compelled to dig deeper and expose the hidden and unseen from the world around me. Growing up in Vancouver in the 90s, watching it turn from a timid, Western Canadian big small town into a decadently rich city of glass towers, sports cars and luxury brands, contrasted by an ever growing poverty and drug problem, I moved to Barcelona only to realise that it too battles with a dual identity. The trending images of this city that bring over 30 million tourists every year have surely caught anyone’s eye. However, it didn’t take me long to discover that a much greater value of this place lies in the hidden, unseen sites that do not seem worthy of our current communication channels. I am interested in exploring these places, giving them the importance that they deserve and showing off their beauty. When I walk around I choose images to paint based both on the meaning of their content and the visual balance of colours and shapes.

BIO

I was born in Sarajevo in 1980 where I lived until the civil war broke out and forced me to seek refuge elsewhere, eventually bringing me to Vancouver, Canada where I grew up. My tumultuous childhood was driven by creativity mostly based in drawing and painting. I graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and design with a Bachelors of Fine Art. I currently live, work and paint in Barcelona.
