About

English Eccentric - artist turned jewellery designer

My name is Joanne and I live by the sea in Cornwall with my partner, Paul. I like to walk in nature everyday, soaking up the atmosphere, the colours and the light. The influence of my surroundings always seem to find it's way into my creative expressions somehow, whether through an idea, a colour, or a texture.

THE PAST SHAPES THE PRESENT
My background is as a fine artist - painting atmospheric images of nature. I studied fine art at Falmouth College of Arts and went on to have a 25 year career exhibiting at venues such as The Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court Palace, The National Trust and various London galleries. I was also fortunate to receive awards from The Mail on Sunday and The British Watercolour Society. And I never imagined I would ever do anything other than paint.
But somehow my passion for colour, texture, fashion and style lead me into the realm of jewellery design as well.

My art has now taken a step back so that I can concentrate on my passion for jewellery.

I think my love, appreciation and study of art has greatly influenced my understanding of colour, texture and form. My approach to creating jewellery is definately with an artist's eye - noticeable perhaps in the way I blend colours, for example, or the way I use texture quite extensively to create subtle detailing. I find jewellery making to be the perfect compliment to my life as an artist, for I see jewellery not only as adornment, but as art for the body. With each piece I make, I find myself considering how it will hang, it's length, weight, and the way it moves, even who may end up wearing it - for all these aspects, added together, become the essence, the soul, of the piece.

MY INSPIRATIONS
I am also totally inspired by the jewellery materials themselves - gemstones, shells, feathers, ribbons and threads. Everyday I delight in the raw materials that sit in my studio. I love to let my imagination wander and pick out little colour stories that weave from one item to another. Colours that speak of the forest, in deep and verdant tones, or perhaps exotic tales of birds and their fanciful feathers - iridescent and exquisite. Every piece has a story to tell, and every customer becomes a part of that story, woven together through the simple act of wearing.

IN MY STUDIO
The studio of most artists, craftsmen, collectors, inventors and general eccentrics is a crazy wonderful place, one where all sorts of items have gathered, either because they are tools of the trade, raw materials, or because they inspired or intrigued in some way. Well, my studio is no different! It's a 3-dimensional sketchbook where my ideas are scattered about for future reference - little piles and collections of beads, fabrics, paint swatches; this and that, here and there - interesting items that form connections and begin to unfold their secrets and stories. I'll start creating something by surveying these little collections and seeing which one I'm drawn to working with on the day, which one speaks to me, which story wants to be told. I'll begin by collecting, gathering and assembling selected bits and pieces - a very organic and enjoyable process, and one that often changes direction, several times even. Which is, of course, all part of the fun, as I much prefer to work intuitively, allowing ideas to unfold naturally.

I sincerely hope that my jewellery is imbued with my love, joy and delight for it, and my greatest wish is that it goes on to inspire, uplift and delight you whenever you wear it. I honestly want you to feel truly fabulous and feminine in your Artique Boutique Jewellery!
