Announcement   This shop name is best pronounced if you pretend for a moment that you are Inspector Clouseau. You know, it gives us a faux Paris flea market appeal. 'Cept we're in Alabama. And the flea markets here mostly have socks. Vintage Squalor declines to decorate with socks.

When peers walk into my home for the first time, they invariably say, "Your house reminds me so much of my grandmother's!" Usually they manage to include in this statement a touch of nostalgia combined with a smear of disbelief and a hint of distaste. Of course, most of their homes look like furniture store showrooms, and while there is something to be said for their clutter-free and clean-lined lives against neutral walls, I enjoy what I like to think of as my happy clutter (that often borders on chaos--thus, the Squalor part of our shop name) and colorful home. So I am learning to not take so much offense from such sensibilities. In the meantime, I can't help returning to the yard and estate sale circuit every Saturday. Every single person in my family suffers from this problem. It just has to be genetic. And I married a man whose family has the same problem. Our kids will probably wind up being hoarders.

About

Squalid Tale

As my husband and I surveyed our kitchen one evening after feeding children and clearing supper, the view included a sink overflowing with dishes, a full trash can, chopping boards with vegetable trimmings and various condiments littering the counters. In a word, the kitchen was a wreck. It was downright depressing. But in the background lurked a collection of miniature china animals in a deep window sill, the fetching little nooks and crannies that result from the roof lines of our tudor style home, the retro china we started collecting before we got married. And I remarked to my husband, "We have cute things. Our house _could_ be really cute if weren't such a mess." He replied, "I know. We live in Vintage Squalor."

The story of our married life is an ongoing battle against clutter, fought by two people who cannot resist a deal, cannot keep away from yard sales, thrift shops, estate sales, and auction houses, and who cannot organize no matter how hard they try.

Shipping
We ship in the U.S. and internationally. Our shipping rates are estimates. We will refund payment for items damaged in shipment, except in the case of internationally shipped items that are uninsured. We ask that customers work with us on insured items to file accurate claims for reimbursement.
