I am very pleased with the necklace. The assembly of the items make a beautiful statement. I have received many compliments! This is the 2nd necklace I have purchased from Marsha, and it is one of my favorite shops that I visit often.

About

A Story of Reinvention

My shop began in 1973. No, not on Etsy, but literally. As a single Mom with not much support and faced with taking care of my two young sons, I began my first business. I started doing something called Plant Parties. Anybody remember those? It was like Tupper Ware, but not. That business was called Pots and Plants. This was a time when the only plants you could buy were philodendrons in the 5 & 10. I knew very little about plants but I had a window sill full of them and I wanted to know more. I took extension classes from our local agricultural department and gained precious knowledge. That was in the beginning of the wonderful hippie era and the original going green movement. I was at the right place at the right time. There was only one supplier available at that time and they were importing tropical plants from all over. I invested my last $200 (a fortune back then) and filled my station wagon with plants. Good friends agreed to have parties and I sold everything. This success hooked me on retail. Another friend who wrote a column for the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote about me and I got booked for three years. No kidding. I didn't even have a calendar that far in advance so I used a school copy book. I would call people up two years later and ask if they remembered me and did they still want to do the party. They would say "Are you kidding, we've been waiting two years." Well, long story, short, that business turned into a plant shop which turned into a full service flower shop. which turned into a very large gift and decorative accessory shop, which turned into an interior design business (deep breath) which finally turned into retirement 35 years later.

Enter the wonderful world of ETSY. I opened my first shop in 2008 to try to sell the art I had been making in my basement studio for years. Retirement for me definitely didn't mean being idle. I was always making things, whether to sell in my flower shop, my gift shop or for my wonderful design clients. I taught myself how to solder and made glass terrariums for the flower shop, glass jewelry boxes for the gift shop, and glass windows for the design business. I learned how to fuse and slump glass and began making custom jewelry pieces for my clients. It was early in the ETSY years and I felt ready to reinvent myself again. The name Vintagearts seemed to incorporate everything I loved. My Mom and Dad were antique dealers and I was raised with an appreciation of all things old and beautiful. Combining soldered glass and vintage items seemed natural, mixing the old with the new to create entirely individual and unique pieces. Now I get to play in my studio, at home, in my bunny slippers, with my wonderful supportive husband and my fluffy puppy Toby. Experimenting with new things all the time is the most exciting part of this wonderful life and it feels like there are no limits. Look for my latest passion, making mixed media fiber art collage which will be coming soon.

Thank you so much for visiting my site. I'm a retired interior designer who's been making art all my life. I'm so happy to now be able to do it full time. I love using anything vintage or antique and try to incorporate these things in my pieces. I'm constantly searching for new things to add to my stash. I hope you like my art as much as I love making it.
