About

Born With A Bunch of Silver Spoons

Not literally. Both of my parents were well known antique dealers in Philadelphia in the 1950's and 60's. My Mom began collecting when my sister and I were babies. We were taken to auctions and estate sales as toddlers and warned not to touch, not to speak too loud and in general not to be little children. For a long time, this made me less interested in antiques but as I got older I began to see and understand my Mother's passion. In the mid 1960's after I got married, Mom and Dad lost their store to a Philadelphia street widening project and they decided to move to California and open a shop out there. Every time I went to visit I drooled over the exquisite things in Mom's house. Her passions were collecting vintage ephemera (Mom never met a piece of paper she didn't like). button collections and most of all antique china and silver. Truly, this is a communicable disease and I had it bad. Back home I was doing my own collecting. Sadly in the early 90's both of my parents passed away. It was devastating but my sister and I had to go through and pack up everything. This was a treasure hunt like no other. I spent three teary weeks in California packing and shipping things back home. The things from the shop didn't upset me too much but my mom's personal collections were another story. Once home, I put everything in storage and there it all sat for about 15 years. At some point in 2009 after opening an ETSY shop to sell the jewelry I was making, my family convinced me to part with my parent's things. I mean I was getting older and you can't take it with you. By this time most of the pieces were well over 100 years old. I opened my 2nd ETSY shop and began listing some of Mom's pieces. What a job. Before I listed something I had to do the research to figure out what it was, where it came from and how old it was. I really became aware of how daunting my Mom's job was. She had no internet to look things up but she had a voluminous library and was truly a self taught expert. Some of the pieces still have her original labels but most don't. I save all of the labels just because they have her handwriting on them.

Even though it's sad to part with these things, I treasure the friendships I've made with collectors all over the world. I know Mom would be proud that I carry on her love of beautiful things and I know she would have been thrilled to do it herself.
