About

It All Started with a Bet

Well, it didn't actually all start with a bet. It really started when I was younger and my fascination with rocks. Both of my parents really had supported my interest in these rocks and would take me to rock and mineral shows. I even had a small collection started. I was drawn to the beautiful colors and shapes and was so intrigued that something so beautiful could come from the earth.

My love for these minerals eventually turned into beading, and that was where my love and interest for jewelry really picked up. Even at a young age, I would make earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, and sell them to family, family friends, and even people I did not even know! I found it fun and addicting.

I had been accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and had every intention of going through the Metals and Jewelry program. SCAD has a school store where students, teachers, and alumni can sell their artwork called ShopSCAD and not long after arriving in Savannah, I had made a stop over at the school store and was able to sell many of my pieces that helped me get into the school, be put up for sale through the store. It was the beginning to a long and established relationship for many years after that.

I had put in my four years at SCAD, receiving my BFA in Metals and Jewelry and ready to take on the world! Well, maybe not the world, but certainly try to get me out there. I was still selling to ShopSCAD and my pieces had developed beyond the beading that had been initially sold there so long ago. I had gone back to Louisiana unsure what to do with myself and my work. I had found a job with a chandelier designer and was with them for a few months and a few odds and ends jobs here and there.

One thing about myself I have always known was that I never wanted to work for anyone but myself. I like to create my own path instead of walking the routes that everyone has already followed. After about a year or so living in Louisiana, my boyfriend, who had recently moved back to Savannah kept bugging me to come move with him. We were living apart for most of that year since he was from Massachusetts. After much convincing, he finally got me to cave and move in with him. All he wanted me to do was work on my jewelry and do the best I could do to sell it.

I was still selling to ShopSCAD but they weren't buying as much and I was trying to open up other avenues for my jewelry. I had stopped creating jewelry a few times to take on part-time jobs that ultimately left me exhausted and were taking to much time away from what I wanted to do, which was make Jewelry. So I would quit these jobs and go right back to creating.

Now, this is where things begin to get a little interesting. Griffin, my boyfriend could see that I was becoming frustrated that I was having trouble moving some of my items. A little background on him; Griffin is a Massachusetts native and graduated from SCAD with a BFA in painting. He has a wonderful eye for color and what I think is a crazy addiction to anything with motors and wheels. Most of his work was based around it. He, unfortunately, does not practice it as much as I would like him to but that another story. As a hobby, he likes to work on cars and race them from time to time, legally of course.

One thing that Griffin does really well is before starting anything, he will research everything before attempting it. We had both known about Etsy for years, purchasing items from other vendors off and on. Speaking with other local artists, and seeing Etsy success stories, Griffin knew that there had to be a way to succeed and have a profitable business that could sell on Etsy. And like anything, it took a lot of convincing that he ultimately did not win. What started it was a bet he came up with. I would have to pay for all of the initial fees for the listing and such, but he would manage it using what he had learned. All I had to do was create. And the bet was that we had to sell five item within the first three months. And if that didn't happen, then he would pay me back for all of the listings that were put up and we would be done with it or continue. But if we did make those five sales, then I would have to compete in one of his race events. Let's just say that I thought I had this in the bag, but boy was I wrong. At this point, I pretty much owe him a race car! And I am grateful for it every moment that I do this.
