Bio
Velvet's love of, and participation in, the art field dates back to her early childhood, persisting for 53 years, and on into the future. It began formally with classes in ceramics and linocut in Highschool. Then she took college courses in painting and sculpture. In the late 80's she attended The Torpedo Factory, in Alexandria, Virginia. There, she learned how to screenprint, paint on silk, transfer images, and work with fiber. She also began watching any and all PBS shows on painting, including those of Helen Van Wyke and Jerry Yarnell.

By the mid 90's, Velvet began to purchase many tapes, books, and, later, DVDs on numerous techniques of painting. Later, when she took classes in polymer clay, she also found and watched many tapes and DVDs about that medium. To date, she has watched and learned from over 150 tapes and DVDs, several hundred plus books, and several hundred magazines on painting.

In the late 90's, Velvet discovered decorative art at a Decorative Art convention in Phoenix, Arizona. She followed up with one year of tole painting classes at a local shop in Glendale, Arizona.

Velvet's formal education was in Computer Science with a Masters in Counseling Psychology and an M.Ed. In Curriculum and Instruction. Although Velvet's vocation, for 29 years, was in the field of Software Engineering, with a two year stint as an Elementary School Teacher, she found time to paint every day after work and on weekends. In 2003 she became disabled. Over the next few years, in an attempt to reinvent herself, she immersed herself in her art, which became an emotional release as well as an aesthetic one. She now spends whatever time possible in the creation of fine art paintings. Her paint mediums have ranged from acrylic, mixed media, and oil, to watercolor, with acrylics being her current focus. She sells these pieces of artwork on her website, www.VisualGemsStudio.com.

Artist Statement
My favorite style of painting is realism with a painterly edge. My paintings range from florals and bird paintings, to still lifes, and studies in face and form.

I paint because I have a strong desire to express in paint beautiful or thought provoking images. Sometimes a section of a photo or something I see gives me an idea that I want to combine and bring together as a visual statement.

When people look at my work, I would like them to experience the same feelings that I felt when I first saw the image or thought of it. But most of all, I feel elated when someone looks at one of my paintings and finds something about it that really attracts them or moves them.
