I draw inspiration from many places, but it is my graphic design background that guides me in wanting to add intricate surface decoration to my pieces that make each one unique. I love stamping, incising lines, and patterning my pieces with a variety of tools and surface techniques. Bringing a designers eye to functional pots is my passion.

About

Artful ceramics with purpose.

My successful career in advertising had left a void unfulfilled in me. I knew I needed some way to get back to my fine arts roots and making things by hand again. It all started with a one day wheel-throwing class. From that moment on I was hooked and knew I had found my new passion. I left my full-time career and embarked on a journey to pursue my new found love of clay.

Over the last 6 years I have immersed myself in a local studio taking classes and independent study to hone my craft and develop my skills as a ceramic artist. The possibilities of clay are both liberating and healing to me. Every time I sit at the wheel the process teaches me something new and exciting.

I am a ceramic artist with a focus on detailed surface design and decoration. My background in graphic design has naturally led me to explore pattern, texture, geometry, and repetition on my pieces through the use of a wide range of surface techniques.

Each porcelain piece is carefully examined, often divided into sections, and selectively stamped, incised, marked, inlaid (mishima), and sometimes altered until I achieve a pattern that compliments the form. I am also interested in the use of modern technology to further my pattern making and often use the computer and my design skills to create vinyl masks for water etching and glaze resisting.

Art Deco design & architecture, linear geometrics, and bold graphical shapes are influences that can be seen in my work. The rigidity of incised lines juxtaposed with textural stamped impressions and raised ornamental details plays with the balance of hard and soft, subtraction and addition. While form and function are of equal importance to me, in my work they serve as the canvas to carry the surface design in concert with them.

Welcome to VisualMatter on etsy! My name is Jess and all the items in my shop are handmade by me.

My ceramics are made in fine grolleg porcelain unless otherwise noted in the listing. All pottery is food, dishwasher and microwave safe. I recommend hand washing for extended life and beauty of the glazes.
My pots are stamped with my official logo mark seen here www.jesspalmer.com and sometimes accompanied by my name as J. Palmer.
