About

Small Run Handmade Ceramics and Pottery

Vitreous Wares is small batch ceramic studio based in Portland, Oregon run by me, Crystal Van Wyk. In 2006 I attained my degree in sculpture at the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Vitreous Wares was started in 2011 after working for many different artists and designers here in Portland.

All of my work is handmade with either slabs of clay or slip cast from molds that I make. I never use a potter’s wheel. I love working with slabs of clay and once I get a form I’m happy with, I fabricate a plaster mold and produce small runs of 50 or less of that piece. I make each piece one at a time and no two are ever exactly alike. Many of my glazes are specific to my shop and have taken years to develop.

Kilns at Vitreous Wares are run with 100% renewable energy and the studio is lead free. Clay is recycled and very little waste is generated. Most pieces represent hours of work and are made of high quality materials.

Welcome to Vitreous Wares! Handmade, original ceramics by myself, Crystal Van Wyk, in Portland, Oregon.

I believe handmade objects should look handmade and embrace their unique qualities. I love simple, organic shapes that celebrate the fact that they were made one at a time. I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2006. The name Vitreous Wares comes from the process that happens in ceramics when they become watertight - vitrification.

Please feel free to send me a message with any questions you might have. I am currently selling ready made items only.

If you are sending a gift please let me know so I don't include an invoice with your order! I am also happy to include a small note to the recipient.

Payment
Payment must be received within 2 days of placing your order. Shipping will happen once payment is received.
Shipping
Shipping is fulfilled 1-2 business days after payment is received (Saturday and Sunday are not business days). I try my best to ship a.s.a.p. Prices listed are for USPS and you will receive an email letting you know your order has shipped. Insurance is included for orders over $75.

Shipping ceramics is very expensive! I am a small business and don't qualify for a discount on shipping. I use recycled materials for shipping as one way of trying to cut down on shipping costs. I don't make any profit on shipping, the price listed is often subsidized by me. If there does happen to be a significant overage I will send a refund.

International customers - Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to purchase.

I can not change your order once it is shipped. I can not guarantee delivery times or dates - once I give it to the post office it is not in my control. Please contact me before you purchase an item if you need something by a specific date as you may need upgraded shipping services.

Local Portland, Oregon people have the opportunity to avoid shipping costs and pickup from me directly. I'm located in inner SE Portland near Powell. Your item can be picked up after I receive payment. Use coupon code PDXPICKUP if you would like to use this option and please send me a message to find a mutually agreeable time.
Refunds and Exchanges
If your order is damaged in shipping please let me know within 3 days and I will replace the order for you as soon as possible or refund your money. I will need a photo of the broken item for insurance purposes.

I spend a lot of time trying to accurately describe and depict all of my items. Please remember that there are variations in monitor displays and that these are all handmade items and vary slightly from one piece to the next.

If you would like to return an item, buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. I will refund you for the cost of the item (less shipping) upon receipt of the returned item(s). If you would like to exchange an item you can return yours and order the piece you would like online.
Additional policies and FAQs
I have suspended wholesale and consignment orders indefinitely.
