Making Ceramic Jewelry
In 2010 I began exploring ceramic as a creative medium. There was a small kiln at home, so I began small...with jewelry. Earlier in my career, I co-owned a "trompe l'oeil" mural business and was always interested in art that "tricked the eye". So it was not surprising that my first experiments were making the sweetheart candies. I researched and tested all my glazing choices until I found just the right colors and texture to match the actual candy.
Next I wanted to play with the effect of drawing and watercolor painting on ceramic. That's when I used the farmer's market as my subject. I was happy with the tiny illustrations that became permanently fired onto the clay. Ultimately, I was able to combine the softness of drawing and watercolor with the hard glossy finish of ceramic in my favorite piece "Illustrated Winter Trees".
My studio is a corner of a table in a small apartment in San Francisco. I live with my husband and son who use other corners of the table for their projects: including but not limited to drawing, watchmaking and letterpress printing.
