A lot of listings are for UPCYCLED garments-- they were sourced from local thrift stores, secondhand shops, and clothing swaps. We think this is very important; our landfills are filled with fabric that could have been given new life with a little tweaking, tailoring, or dyeing...

Reasons We Should Upcycle:

During the past 35 years, the amount of waste each person creates has almost doubled from 2.7 to 4.4 pounds per day. The most effective way to stop this trend is by preventing waste in the first place when we can.

Reduces the need for landfills and incineration.

Recycling diverted over 72 million tons of material away from landfills and incinerators in 2003, up from 34 million tons in 1990—doubling in just 10 years. Recycling turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources.

Saves energy and conserves natural resources.

Helps sustain the environment for future generations.

IT SAVES MONEY! You can re-dye goods at a fraction of the cost of new goods.

**CUSTOM ORDERS:
If you don't see EXACTLY what you're dreaming of, contact us and we can make whatever size/color/design you want! We draw in hot wax on fabrics before dyeing them, so virtually any design you love can be rendered into a splashy, crackled, batik look.

Multiples & batches are our speciality. Imagine beautifully hand dyed shirts in different sizes so your family/ club/ team can match.

About

My tie-dye love affair began while teaching at a summer camp, and I turned it into a professional life-long passion!

I was teaching full time at an amazing boarding school when the idea to start my own batik & tie-dye shop started to really pull at my imagination. I had been self employed before, living in Brooklyn, and although that time of my career was partially focused on dyeing, the majority of my energies were being put into the knitting and fiber arts arena. You can still see over eighty free instructional videos that were produced, starring me, on www.happygocrafty.com. After leaving NYC, I moved back to my native Appalachian mountains to teach crafts and music & dance full time, but only made it two years before I was back in the entrepreneurial seat again.

My concept for WAXON Batik & Dye Studio has yet to be fully realized, though we get closer every season. What I envision is a retail storefront with a studio workshop right there inside; a bit like a "paint your own pottery" model but with fabrics and dyeing. The hot wax will be ready, the dyes mixed and displayed, and all customers have to to do is walk in! This vision proves challenging in a swiftly growing city like Asheville, NC; artists' studio spaces are increasingly unaffordable to artists, and retail spaces come and go fast enough to make your head spin. I fully believe the right combo of foot-traffic + right neighborhood + price point + amenities needed to run a dye studio WILL manifest... and until then, @waxonstudio is open by appointment only and is tucked away in a very "pre-gentrified" part of town (but home to many, many talented artists who don't mind being off the beaten track.

Everything you see on the Etsy store, on our instagram, on the website, and in person at the studio or at summer festivals and craft shows is made right here, in our 500 square foot dye studio, by hand lovingly and patiently, mostly by me (Jess, the owner) or Leslie, a local mama and craftswoman who I met my freshman year of college. Gone are our patchwork corduroys and dreadlocks but we still love playing with dye and creating one of a kind garments that inspire us.
