WHAT IS A MALA AND WHAT IS A MANTRA?

Mala, which is Sanskrit word for garland, is a string of typically 108 beads and additional guru bead, which are used as a meditation tool while chanting or silently repeating a mantra. Mala can also have a tassel attached at the end, which in traditional Buddhist culture is a symbol of lotus blossoms that represent an enlightenment. Malas are most often made with 21, 24, 27, 54 or 108 beads; numbers, devided by number 9.
When mala is not used for meditation, it can help wearers attain a sense of peace, mindfulness and focus throughout the day.

Mantra is Sanskrit word for sound, syllable, word or group of words. When repeating a personal mantra, the mind calms down and we reach a deeper level of relaxation and awareness.

HOW TO USE MY MALA FOR MEDITATION?

Select a pleasant and comfortable place. Choose a relaxed sitting position and focus on breathing – allow it to be natural and spontaneous. When breathing becomes longer and more peaceful, focus on your purpose or personal mantra and stay in silence for a while.

You can also meditate in the classic Tibetan way: start by holding your mala beads in your left hand between the index finger and thumb. Begin to repeat your chosen mantra and move to the next bead with each repetition of the mantra. Each bead represents one repetition of the mantra. When you finish one set of 108 repetitions and reach the "guru bead", you can finish or do another 108 repetitions in the opposite direction.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF MY MALA?

Please know that all mala necklaces are hand knotted and strung on a natural silk thread so they are fragile and require a gentle care. Tassels are also made of natural silk thread and they also require a gentle care.
Mala bracelets and wrap malas are made on a strong elastic cord. If you will put too much pressure on a cord, it will break.

Avoid any contact with water and any activities that may cause frequent stretching of your mala, because that will lead to damage of your mala. I advise you to keep your mala in a cotton/jute bag when travelling and do not hang your mala when not using it because a silk thread has a bit of elasticity in it and may cause the thread to extend. You can put it in a bag or just lay it in a safe place. Sterling silver (925) beads may darken over time. You can use a dry cloth to polish them and make them shine again.

HOW TO CLEANSE MY MALA:

The beads are believed to absorb and store energy, therefore you may wish to cleanse your mala beads from time to time. Try not to lend or share your mala with others as not to transfer any energy. If this does happen you may wish to cleanse your mala. To remove any unwanted energy, leave your mala in moonlight overnight. You can do this ritual once a month (or more) for a natural recharge.

HOW IS MY MALA PACKED?

Each mala bracelet comes in a natural cotton bag and mala necklace comes in a natural jute bag, which is packed in a beautiful recycled gift box made of natural paper with printed logotype on it. Within a box you will also find descriptions of all gemstones that mala consists of and a leaflet with details about mala and mantra, used materials and details about how to use your mala for meditation and how to take care of your mala.
