I got this as a gift for my brother who is about to travel around the world. He loved it instantly and even took it in a short trip recently. He's already been asked where he got it by strangers in an airport! It fits in a pocket, is made of great materials, and I can't wait to see how it holds up to 18 months of travel. Thanks Walnut Studio.

Walnut combines thoughtful modern design with old-world methods and materials.

Hi, I'm Geoffrey Franklin. I'm an 8th generation Oregonian, born and raised in Beaverton and Weston, Oregon. I graduated from the University of Oregon Architecture School.

I run Walnut Studiolo with my wife, Valerie. I design and craft all the products in my workshop, and Valerie runs the business side.

I started Walnut Studiolo in October 2009 because I wanted leather accessories for my bikes (a custom Renovo original wood frame: www.renovobikes.com and my dad's old Bianchi that went on the Seattle-to-Portland (STP) that I had powder-coated in classic cream and brown) but I couldn't find anything like I wanted. So I decided to create my own unique designs, and Valerie decided to post them on Etsy to see what would happen. We grew the business in our home garage in Southeast Portland, Oregon.

Fast forward several years, and now Walnut Studiolo supports us both full-time. In January 2016, we moved ourselves and our workshop into a space with a bigger studio on the gorgeous Oregon Coast.

Bicycle accessories have been my core focus but as I grew my business, I came to expand into other fields that I love, like travel games, beer, and drawer handles. I love learning how to work leather as a medium. Eventually I also started enjoying the juxtaposition of leather and wood.

In these products, I'm expressing my love for good design, architectural concepts, and natural materials in products that I would want to use myself...and I do use myself. I field-test all my products until I'm comfortable with them before listing them on our shop.

My goal is to make high-quality, beautiful, durable, and most of all functional solutions to everyday problems. Thank you for buying small and handmade. I put my heart in everything I make.

Our Mission:
To design durable, unique, and functional (awesome) products that we want to use ourselves and that are:
~hand-tooled in Portland, Oregon
~made out of durable natural materials like leather and wood
~sourced with an emphasis on locally-made and USA-made suppliers
~produced using environmentally responsible methods and materials

We think about our footprint in everything we do! Learn more about our Sustainability Policy here:

We create durable, high quality, and repairable products to prevent landfilling.
We only use vegetable-tanned leather as our main material, which not only provides the structural rigidity that only high quality leather can provide our products, but also uses no chromium and no mercury in tanning. Learn more about the differences in leather in our blog posts.

All of our leather is sourced from a tannery that is exclusively tanned in the USA, following more stringent US environmental laws, and purchased from a local supplier.

Hardware is sourced wherever possible from made-in-the-USA suppliers.
Wherever it is an option, we choose FSC-certified wood.
In all of our operations sourcing, we look for materials in the following priority order: upcycled/reused, recycled or otherwise certified sustainable, and last, new materials.

We re-use waste our own materials wherever possible in our operations, including refilled ink cartridges and upcycled packaging and shipping materials. We are members and customers of our local re-use charity, SCRAP PDX, where we buy many of our upcycled materials and office supplies.
We create products, like the Headphone Organizer, out of our scrap materials. Whatever scrap materials we can't use, we donate to our local re-use center, SCRAP PDX.

We design our retail packaging with an eye towards reusability, to prevent landfilling.

Where re-use is not an option, we opt for maximum recycled content (such as using 100% recycled paper for printing our packing slips).
We encourage and reward alternative transportation, including bicycling to work and for errands.

We support fellow bicycle-based businesses, choosing bicycle-based service providers for food delivery, janitorial services, and more.
