About

Walnut combines thoughtful modern design with old-world methods and materials.

Hi, I'm Geoffrey Franklin. I'm an 8th generation Oregonian, born and raised in Beaverton and Weston, Oregon. I graduated from the University of Oregon Architecture School.

I run Walnut Studiolo with my wife, Valerie. I design and craft all the products in my workshop, and Valerie runs the business side.

In 2008, my wife Valerie and I moved from the suburbs to the cycling-friendly neighborhood of Southeast Portland, Oregon to be closer to our jobs and friends. When I started bicycle commuting to work, I found I wanted things that didn't exist, like old-fashioned leather bar wraps. I was poring over a book of modern photography of vintage Italian bicycles, when I noticed all the leather accents that must have been nearly 100 years old still looked gorgeous. I couldn't find anything on the market like I wanted, so I decided to create my own unique designs for myself.

In 2009, facing the Great Recession, my wife Valerie decided to post them on Etsy to see what would happen, and we were quickly surprised and excited by the reaction. We grew the business in our home garage in Southeast Portland, Oregon. We owe a great deal to the support of the Portland bicycle community in getting started, in particular BikePortland.org and the BikeCraft festival.

Fast forward several years, and now Walnut Studiolo supports us both full-time. We love working together from home, so in January 2016, we moved our home and studio into a space with a bigger workshop on the gorgeous Oregon Coast, fulfilling our lifelong dream of living close to the sea.

Bicycle accessories have been my core focus but as I grew my business, I came to expand into other fields that I love, like travel games, beer, and architectural accents like drawer handles. I love learning how to work leather as a medium. Eventually I also started enjoying the juxtaposition of leather and wood.

In these products, I'm expressing my love for good design, architectural concepts, and natural materials in products that I would want to use myself...and I do use myself. I design all of the products you see here from scratch and I field-test all my design until I'm comfortable with them before listing them on our shop.

My goal is to make high-quality, beautiful, durable, and most of all functional solutions to everyday problems. Thank you for buying small and handmade. I put my heart in everything I make.

Refunds and Exchanges
We'll gladly accept your return of clean and undamaged merchandise within 90 days of shipment for exchange or refund. Returns of merchandise received after 90 days of shipment will be exchanged or refunded on a discretionary basis for merchandise credit for the purchased value of the product, and may be subject to a 10% restocking fee.

We regret that we cannot accept returns on the following items: custom, monogrammed, or laser-engraved products, unless there is a serious manufacturing defect.

If there is a quality issue or serious manufacturing defect on our part, then we can provide you with a postage-paid return label (US addresses only). Note that the normal variations in leather inherent to the qualities of the leather are not considered manufacturing or quality defects, but rather are a signal of the genuine, natural, and high-quality material we use.

Otherwise, return shipment cost is the responsibility of the customer. For clean and undamaged merchandise, the refund will be for the product value and not the original cost of shipping. In some instances, the refund may be subject to a 10% restocking fee.

To send in a return, simply return the merchandise with a note explaining your request for return or exchange and your order receipt to:

Walnut Studiolo

If you wish to return your purchase for a refund, we'll credit your original method of payment for the merchandise purchase price. If you wish to exchange your purchase for a different size, color or style, we'll credit your return shipping charges and ship the new items to you with no additional shipping charge (US addresses only).

If you're not satisfied with your purchase, just let us know why, and we'll work with you to find a satisfactory resolution.

So far, an exceptionally small number of items have come back to us, and we work hard to keep it that way!

Our Mission:
To design durable, unique, and functional (awesome) products that we want to use ourselves and that are:
~hand-tooled in Portland, Oregon
~made out of durable natural materials like leather and wood
~sourced with an emphasis on locally-made and USA-made suppliers
~produced using environmentally responsible methods and materials

We think about our footprint in everything we do! Learn more about our Sustainability Policy here:

We create durable, high quality, and repairable products to prevent landfilling.
We only use vegetable-tanned leather as our main material, which not only provides the structural rigidity that only high quality leather can provide our products, but also uses no chromium and no mercury in tanning. Learn more about the differences in leather in our blog posts.

All of our leather is sourced from a tannery that is exclusively tanned in the USA, following more stringent US environmental laws, and purchased from a local supplier.

Hardware is sourced wherever possible from made-in-the-USA suppliers.
Wherever it is an option, we choose FSC-certified wood.
In all of our operations sourcing, we look for materials in the following priority order: upcycled/reused, recycled or otherwise certified sustainable, and last, new materials.

We re-use waste our own materials wherever possible in our operations, including refilled ink cartridges and upcycled packaging and shipping materials. We are members and customers of our local re-use charity, SCRAP PDX, where we buy many of our upcycled materials and office supplies.
We create products, like the Headphone Organizer, out of our scrap materials. Whatever scrap materials we can't use, we donate to our local re-use center, SCRAP PDX.

We design our retail packaging with an eye towards reusability, to prevent landfilling.

Where re-use is not an option, we opt for maximum recycled content (such as using 100% recycled paper for printing our packing slips).
We encourage and reward alternative transportation, including bicycling to work and for errands.

We support fellow bicycle-based businesses, choosing bicycle-based service providers for food delivery, janitorial services, and more.
