John crafted for me a one-of-a-kind tea box out of gorgeous figured lumber. He adapted one of his designs according to my needs, patiently explaining along the way his design choices. He delivered a piece whose subtle details come together to produce a sublime aesthetic. The box was delivered on time and on budget, too, and was meticulously packed to protect against shipping damage.

About

Fine craftsmanship for your home

I want to help you add beauty to your home. It's that simple. There are a lot of ways you can choose to do that, I know. I have an appreciation for so many forms of art -- drawing, painting, ceramics, glassware, metalwork, the list goes on. But the medium I have chosen to make my craft is wood. And what a beautiful medium it is! Light, dark, coarse, smooth, straight, wavy, knotty, clear, simple, exotic -- there is simply no end to the variety that can be found in wood.

Like so many other artists, my journey to where I am in my craft has been long, and full of learning experiences both enjoyable and frustrating! (I still have some of my earliest works. You don't get to see those. Ever.) I know I will continue to improve, but I am certainly quite happy with the quality of work I am able to design and produce right now. I enjoy designing perhaps most of all, because it both satisfies a requirement that I or a client have placed before me, and it usually challenges me to employ a variety of disciplines in order to bring the design to reality. In many ways, working in wood today can be no different than it was hundreds of years ago, and in many ways it would be unrecognizable, given the tools and technologies available to us today. I use my fair share of modern techniques, materials, and finishes, but I also recognize the enduring utility of traditional joinery and careful workmanship.

I keep as one of my guiding principles a saying attributed to William Morris, a founder of the Arts and Crafts movement in the late 19th century: "Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." I know that can be a tall order. That's why I strive to make everything I create both useful and beautiful, so that once it is in your home, you won't ever have to wonder whether it's something worth keeping as you go through the rest of your life!
