About

Found sea glass and vintage materials inspire me to create

My grandfather was a jeweler, so I've grown up with the desire to create gorgeous, wearable art. I’ve been making jewelry since I was young, following my interest all over the world - for example, I learned to make bone-carved pendants in New Zealand, bead weaving in the American Southwest, and metalsmithing in my hometown of NYC.

In the past few years, I found myself increasingly fascinated by wire wrapping. As a way to relax in free moments after coming home from my hectic full-time job, I sat in front of the TV and made beaded jewelry using wire wrapping. Soon I was making more than I could possibly wear, and getting so many complements on my necklaces, that I decided to start an Etsy shop.

I get my inspiration for creating jewelry from all over - the streets of New York City (where I live), the beach where I grew up and find my sea glass, places I’ve traveled and people I have met, glimpses of nature, saturated color, and especially vintage jewelry. I also get ideas from my materials themselves, since I use antique beads, vintage chains and rhinestones, and found sea glass.

The original idea for making painted sea glass jewelry came when I saw someone wearing a piece of rough coral as a pendant. I got a flash of inspiration, and from there I couldn’t get the idea out of my head and immediately set out figuring out how to make it a reality.

I grew up on the beach, in Rockaway Beach, New York, and my entire family has been collecting sea glass for years when we walk along the shore. Now I’ve raided the jars we’ve been saving up for an inspiration just like this, and put them to good use. I’ve never seen anything like my painted sea glass pendants, so it seems like I’ve created something pretty special.

It’s so much fun to take bits of vintage chains and antique unloved beads that I’ve discovered hidden away at an antique fair, and put them together in original ways. I love to create something a little nostalgic, with a modern twist. I hope you enjoy wearing my creations as much as I have enjoyed giving them life!

Welcome! My shop is named Wandering Laur because I love to travel and explore, and the cultures and places that I discover around the world influence the pieces that I create. Also, I wouldn't have my sea glass supplies without wandering the shoreline, since 100% of the seaglass I use comes from Rockaway Beach, in New York city.
Jewelry is a wonderful expression of culture and personality. My jewelry is eclectic, whimsical, natural, and a little bit nostalgic. I hope it makes you as happy as it has made me to create it!

Additional policies and FAQs
Please contact me if you have a request for a custom order inspired by something in my shop - I might not necessarily have more of the same exact thing, since most of the materials are vintage and in limited quantity, and each piece of glass is one-of-a-kind, exactly in the shape it comes out of the ocean, but I'd be happy to make you something wonderful that suits your needs.
