This is the most breathtakingly beautiful kimono I have ever seen. I was thinking about using the fabric to create my wedding dress, but I don't think I can alter something that is more work of art than item of clothing. Lucia was a pleasure to communicate with, and the kimono arrived very quickly with a perfect little card included. I couldn't be happier with my purchase if it came with free chocolate and a hug.

How I turned a hobby into a business

My Etsy shop was an outgrowth of a brick and mortar store called The Painted Lily in Cambria, CA. I had been collecting Japanese clothing ( kimono, haori and michiyuki ) for many years. I was inspired to open The Painted Lily after meeting a kimono expert who appraised my personal collection.

I was amazed to learn the value of these items that I had been wearing so casually over the years. Some of the antique items were worth as much as $3,000 on the collector's market. His advice: "Don't ever sell these...they are too good." He went on to encourage me to begin looking for items that I could sell and suggested that I consider opening a shop. The timing wasn't right for starting a new business, however I did find some reasonably priced antique and vintage Japanese clothing items at estate sales antique stores and specialty shops. I put on some private invitational sales in my home. In the first weekend I sold almost all the items on the racks!

A few months later, the opportunity to start a co-op gallery with other local artists presented itself. The Painted Lily was born and my part of the gallery featured my new collection of Japanese long kimono, haori jackets and michiyuki coats. This led to suggestions from internet-savvy friends and family that Etsy was the place for me. I hope you enjoy creating your own personal style in clothing and accessories. As another design mentor used to say, "Have fashion courage!"

I bought my first kimono at 17. Putting it on gave me the feeling of having worn one in a previous lifetime. As an adult I have collected and worn Japanese clothing for an east-meets-west style enhanced by my own ethnic jewelry designs.
