About

It started with a passion for history...

and little did I know what path it would take! I became enamored with historical and vintage fashion at a young age, which led me to follow my passion to fashion and costume design.

On a mid-western road trip after high school I picked up my first vintage patterns- some lovely little late 1910's to early 1920s dresses and blouses.

While in college for fashion and costume design, a professor who used to be a friend of Edith Head talked about his collection of vintage sewing patterns, letting us in on a secret used by many film and theatre industry professionals to get an accurate look for newly made vintage clothing.

After graduation I finally unfolded my small little stash of vintage patterns, only to think they were flawed! But it was not so, I just had never seen perforated patterns!

I decided to use the vintage patterns as design inspiration, and started collecting a large number for research for design. The Etsy store started as a way to pass on of some of my excess design inspiration in the form of vintage sewing patterns and vintage clothing, and in time I found I enjoyed finding old patterns, vintage clothing, and other vintage finds, and passing them on to new homes.

Hearing other's response to vintage sewing made me expand into creation of my own pattern line which is based on vintage originals. The patterns are sold off of Etsy, but you can still find great vintage patterns and occasional vintage clothing here on this shop!

This year will mark my fifth year on Etsy, and I'm so very thankful for each of my friends and customers!

Wearing History Patterns are for personal home sewing or non profit use ONLY. These patterns may not be used to make clothing for sale or profit*.

In the above, each of the terms means:

Personal Home Sewing= an individual creating clothing for themselves, their family, or their friends, without financial profit.

Non-Profit Use= Creation of clothing for something of which there is no financial gain. This includes creation of clothing for charity work or charity auction, such as to aid a church group. If you use a pattern for a non-profit activity, such as an education use, please have each of your students purchase a pattern for themselves. Making copies of Wearing History pattern is not allowed. If you are teaching a class, please contact me, as I may be able to make a discount for your group to use if a certain amount of patterns are needed.

*These patterns may be used for custom clothing, provided one pattern is purchased per client, as per industry standards. Buying one pattern and making multiple garments in which you recieve financial gain is not allowed.
Purchase one pattern per client, or have the client purchase the pattern from me directly. This way both the seamstress and I are compensated for our time and talents.

Commercial or production use or making items to sell from Wearing History e-patterns is prohibited. Do not share this pattern by email or any other form. Why the Use Policy?

Nearly everyone knows how frustrating it is to have someone take advantage of their hard work. I’ve poured countless hours of work, research, and finances into making these patterns available. In addition, these aren’t just copies of period materials- I work hard to make these these the best they can be, so many people can enjoy them. I do everything from start to finish- spending countless hours sewing up samples, testing patterns, photographing them on myself or a model, putting together the instructions, grading the patterns to different sizes, packaging and folding them, so it’s easily recognizable to me what has been made from these patterns. Using the patterns in a way they’re not intended by the person who works hard to make them available is just a mean thing to do. Please respect the time and work I put into this enterprise and help support small business. Thank you!

--ABOUT ORIGINAL VINTAGE ITEMS I SELL ON HERE FROM TIME TO TIME--

- - - ~More About Original Period Vintage Sewing Patterns~ - - -
Vintage sewing patterns will have age wear and use that are common with antique paper, including the "old paper" smell, which most vintage folks love! Vintage sewing patterns do not handle as modern patterns as they are quite old and in most cases were previously used. If you are worried about damaging your pattern you may choose to trace it off prior to use on different paper. Most pre-1950s patterns were made of unprinted tissue with perforations (or holes) for markings.

***Vintage patterns had different sizing than patterns of today. *** Bust, waist, and hip measurements are given in inches. Please go by your corresponding measurements instead of the pattern size number.

- - - ~More About Original Period Vintage Clothing~ - - -
Vintage clothing and accessories can be more fragile than modern clothing and are not new should be expected to have some wear and age issues, so please keep that in mind when ordering. Fit of vintage clothing can be quite different than modern clothing, as ease and cut were different than today's standards. Please compare your measurements with the flat measurements given, and allow extra room for ease of wearing. Two inches extra is recommended in the bust and hips, and 1/2" to 1" extra are recommended for the waist.

- - - ~Things to Keep In Mind About Your Vintage Purchase. Read Before Ordering~ - --
All vintage items are previously used, unless otherwise noted, and I try to disclose any major issues. Even if a vintage item was unused or unworn, minor flaws should be expected from age wear and storage from past decades. I receive all items listed here from various places and in most cases do not know their prior "life" before I receive them. Please do not expect vintage items to be in new condition- they do have a bit of a history, which most vintage lovers find adds to their charm and mystery!

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
Payment
I accept Paypal payments and payments via Credit Card.

I charge 8% Sales tax for California residents, per California regulations.

Your transaction will show up as "Wearing History" in your paypal account, which is my legal business name.

EU Vat for Digital Product-
As of 2015, EU residents will need to pay VAT on digital purchases. Etsy handles all collection and remittance of tax. You will see the charges at checkout for your digital purchases if you are an EU resident.
Shipping
All E-patterns are digital files that are available immediately after checkout. They do not require shipping.

For physical items that may be listed in my store, the following shipping terms apply:

****PLEASE ALLOW UP TO 7 DAYS FOR ITEMS TO SHIP**** If you need an item quicker, please check with me before purchase to see if I can accommodate your request PRIOR to ordering. Thank you!

Unless otherwise noted, all items ship via USPS First Class Mail. First class mail can take up to a week to reach locations within the USA, and can take from three weeks to a month to reach locations outside of the USA. Please contact me if you wish to upgrade to a faster shipping method.

While I do my best to give accurate shipping quotes, in the event that shipping was underestimated and more funds are needed, I will message you and let you know any additional amount owed.

A NOTE FOR INTERNATIONAL (NON USA) CUSTOMERS-
Please be aware that international packages can take quite a while to reach their destination. Unless otherwise noted in the listing, all packages are shipped via First Class International, which usually take from three weeks to over a month to reach their destination. If you would like to upgrade to a faster shipping method, please contact me before purchasing the item so I can adjust your item total.

Depending on your country, customs charges may be applicable for purchases on your end. Customs charges vary from country to country- please check with your post office to see which charges may apply. Please note I do not mark items as "gift", and put the actual item price (excluding shipping) on forms according to US laws. I do not cover customs charges, so please be sure to factor in any fees which may be incurred by your country's postal system.

If you live outside the USA and want tracking for your purchase it will need to be upgraded to Express Mail (which also includes insurance)- please message me for shipping quotes if you would like your items shipped this way. Be aware that Express mail is very pricey, and once it leaves the USA it will often not update where the package is until it is delivered.

Etsy now allows us to insure first class mail international packages through a third party shipping insurance agency. If you would like insurance for your purchase, please contact me, as shipping charges listed do not include insurance fees.

If your order weight goes over 4 lbs when it's packaged, the package can not be shipped via First Class mail or via Priority Flat rate. Because of that, packages weighing over 4 lbs will be VERY expensive to ship- $50 and higher. If your package shipping was underestimated by the Etsy shipping calculator I will send you a message letting you know so that I can tell you what additional amount is owed, or you can let me know if you'd like to edit your order because of the high shipping costs.

I do not ship to destinations of Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, or Syria, via USPS regulations. Sorry!

SHIPPING INSURANCE, LOST PACKAGES, TRANSIT TIMES, & PACKAGE TRACKING
As my items listed here are one of a kind and cannot be replaced, I do not cover damage in transit, stolen packages, or packages lost in transit. If you're concerned that this may occur to your package, please send me a message after purchase and let me know to add shipping insurance to your purchase. This service is an additional fee from based on item value- usually between $1-$5, but for valuable items it's a good way to protect your investment.

TRANSIT TIMES
Unless otherwise noted, all items ship via USPS First Class Mail. First class mail can take up to a week to reach locations within the USA, and can take from three weeks to a month to reach locations outside of the USA.

Holidays, weather, mis-routed packages, and other unforeseen things may occur once the package is in the hands of the shipping agent which may delay the arrival.

If you are an international customer and have not received your package, and it has been longer than two weeks, please contact your local post office. It may be being held for customs duty and customers have informed me that occasionally their post offices do not notify them of this.

PACKAGE TRACKING
Paypal should forward you a tracking number through email on all orders within the USA, and if it doesn't you can find the number in your Paypal transaction record on the Paypal site. If you have paid with a Credit Card, I will note your tracking number on Etsy. Tracking numbers are not available for international packages except in the case of Express mail, but customs form numbers are noted which will update occasionally en route, including when they leave the United States and when they reach the international destination. Customs numbers can also come in handy if you need to visit your local post office in order to inquire about a late package, as they are sometimes held for customs duty and the post office neglects to notify the customer.

Refunds and Exchanges
Returns and Exchanges are not allowed on sewing patterns. Sorry!

If you have recieved an item in error, or an item you haver recieved is defective, contact us immediately, by filling out the refund request form, so we can rectify the situation.

If you believe that you receive an item that was misrepresented, or you find there is a problem with your item upon receipt, please contact me ASAP so we can work on a resolution. Most vintage items listed are one of a kind, so items will not be able to be substituted or exchanged. I do value each of my customers and want you to be happy with your purchase!

Regarding original vintage patterns: If I made a mistake on counting vintage pattern pieces, or if you purchase a pattern that is in factory folds and when you open it you find it is missing pieces contact me and return within 3 business days of receiving it and the original cost will be refunded after the pattern is sent back. This, of course, does not apply to patterns that are noted in the description as missing pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Tell me how Wearing History patterns differ from vintage patterns.

**Note in the description if you're purchasing an original vintage pattern or a Wearing History pattern**
--You do not have to be afraid of harming a delicate original vintage pattern.
--They cost a fraction of the price of purchasing an original rare vintage pattern.
--The patterns are easier to understand and clearly marked pieces instead of holes or dot markings.
--Most patterns are multi-sized so you can cut the size you need. Original vintage patterns were only single size in a packet.
--E-patterns are downloadable and printable at home. You can buy and start sewing in a weekend!
--Several Wearing History patterns are drafted by me and/or have new instructions (These are the Signature Styles patterns).

What sort of fit or ease can I expect with these patterns?

--Very little ease is included in comparison to modern standards, and most run true to size.
--Armholes and sleeves fit higher than tighter than modern standards. You may need to alter your sleeves & armscyes if you prefer modern fit with more ease.
--Resto-Vival patterns are based on original period patterns and were meant to be worn with period foundations- Girdles, period bras, etc may make a difference in fit. A Victorian or Edwardian garment will be sized to fit over a corset.
--All patterns are based on Misses or Women's patterns. Petites, tall, juniors, and & sizes will most likely need adjustments
--ALWAYS make a mock up before cutting into your final fabric.

What type of patterns are your "Signature Style" patterns?

New patterns based on original period sources or brand new designs with new step-by-step illustrated instructions, improved fit, and new cutting layouts and yardage requirements for modern fabric widths. These patterns can either be based on period originals with changes that improve the original pattern fit and instructions, or a unique draft to Wearing History that has been drafted by me personally and heavily researched to be period correct. These patterns also include instructions that are hand drawn or digitally drawn and composed by me personally.

What type of patterns are your "Resto-Vival" patterns?

Resto-Vival patterns are restored and revived based on historical pattern source material. Original patterns are usually available only in single sizes, precut from tissue paper and totally unprinted, with details like grainlines and darts indicated only by small perforations. Resto-Vival™ patterns are clearly marked with drawn and labeled markings. Resto-Vival™ patterns follow the period shapes of the original patterns, maintaining the historical accuracy of the completed garment. Original period instructions are included, the complexity of which can vary from pattern to pattern. Older patterns may have text only instructions. Intermediate to advanced sewing knowledge is recommended. We suggest keeping a sewing book handy.

Why do you say to make a mock up? Can't I just cut it out and start sewing?

I ALWAYS suggest to make a muslin mock up to check fit and construction before cutting into your fashion fabric. Every body is different, even if measurements are similar, and making a mock up of inexpensive fabric is the only surefire way to make sure your garment will fit your unique figure and have the ease you want. Don’t make a garment out of your final fabric without testing and expect it to be perfect- it’s just not feasible. It’s kind of like going shopping at the mall– you don’t expect every item on a hanger to fit you perfectly and it requires some trying on. Not all sizes run the same between all the stores and brands. The same is true of sewing patterns, so make your mock up!

Do you offer pattern making or pattern grading services? Do you do custom sewing?

I'm sorry, I do not offer pattern making services, pattern grading services, or custom sewing.

Sizing details

Please view each individual pattern for size information, as size can vary from pattern to pattern.
Please keep in mind that patterns are based on misses or women's sizing. Plus size, juniors, petites, and tall sizes will most likely require additional alterations so I highly suggest making a mock up before sewing your final garment.

Will I receive a diagram I need to draft, or a full size pattern?

All patterns are full size, unless otherwise indicated. They may use a LOT of paper to print, but are already sized and graded for you.

Tell me more about e-patterns. What kind of format are they, and how do I assemble?

When you buy an e-pattern from me, you receive a multi-page PDF file you download to your computer and print at home. The patterns are formatted to fit on both 8.5 x 11 sized letter and A4 paper. All pages are tiled to make it easy for home sewists to print at home and then assemble into a larger pattern sheet.
You print the patterns at 100% scale or "actual size", and then cut and tape the dotted lines together.
All pattern pages are numbered, so you can keep track of you process. An additional file is included to help with assembly- make sure you read it before you print your files.
I have been told by many customers that my e-patterns are some of the easiest to assemble, and I'm thankful for their high praise!

Do you sell wide format, printed patterns that can be sent in the mail?

Yes, I do. These are not currently listed in my Etsy store.
