About

After 40+ years, it's still the joy of photography.

I've been a photographer for a bit over four decades, which kind of gives away the secret that I am not prematurely gray. Initially I was a small town newspaper guy, then moved to Dallas in 1976 for a 33 year stay. In Dallas, I photographed portraits and weddings and began developing a stock photography business, as well.

In 2008, my bride and I finally escaped the heat and rush of Dallas and moved to the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in eastern Tennessee. Now, I'm having the time of my life photographing the beauty of the area along with other eye-catching subjects.

For me, tripping the shutter is just the beginning of creating photographic art. When the latent image moves from the memory card to the computer, I begin the process of optimizing the tones, colors and brightness of the image. After that, other specialized computer programs allow me to bring additional detail out for the viewer to enjoy.

I grew up in lovely Magnolia, Arkansas, had a 33-year wilderness experience in the great (but hot) state of Texas, and my bride and I finally made it to our promised land of eastern Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains on Valentines Day, 2008.

Welcome to Smoky Mountain Images / Wendell Franks Fine Art!

After decades of weddings, portraits, business and stock photography, I've finally escaped the big city and am able now to focus on the photography I love most -- beautiful images for walls around the world. (To learn a little about me, please click on “About” over to the left.) My photographic tastes are quite varied, so you can expect to see different flavors of images almost every time you check back. I hope you’ll come see me often.

Payment
I accept PayPal as well as credit cards, debit cards and Etsy Gift Cards through Etsy’s Direct Checkout. My fellow Tennessee residents will have 9.75% sales tax added to orders. I will begin your order just as soon as the funds clear through Etsy.
Shipping
Each photograph you order will be hand-printed by me (8x10 through 16x20) or, for canvas wrap prints, by a top-level professional lab with decades of customer satisfaction in their heritage. Under normal circumstances, I will ship prints I print within 5 days of your payment being received, and the lab which produces my canvases will normally ship within 7 days. Each package I ship within the United States will go Priority Mail with a tracking number and delivery confirmation, while the canvases will travel UPS, also with tracking. I will convo your tracking number to you. Please inquire about shipping to other countries.

All orders will be carefully packaged to reach you in perfect condition.
Refunds and Exchanges
I want every transaction to be a delight. If you get a package that’s damaged, just convo me a picture of the damage and I will immediately follow-up with the shipping company and get you a replacement print as soon as circumstances allow.

Each order is created especially for the person who orders it, so I ask that you please examine an image carefully before placing an order. If there is shipping damage or an obvious quality defect with a print that you can show us we will, of course, provide you a replacement. However, I am not able to issue refunds or exchanges because you change your mind. (This sounds harsh and I wish it didn't, but this policy is an economic necessity for me. I really do everything I can to have nothing but 100% satisfied customers with every transaction.)

A photographic print never looks quite as bright as the image does when viewed on a computer monitor, but both kinds of prints we provide have -- so far -- delighted every one of our customers at both the art shows we appear in locally as well as through Etsy. The paper prints I produce have very brilliant colors. The canvas prints, because the surface material is different, are slightly more muted, but still vibrant.
Additional policies and FAQs
I hand-print every photograph from 8x10 through 16x20 sizes personally. My canvas wrap prints are printed by a professional lab whose company has been supplying satisfied professional photographers for over 50 years. Both the prints that I create personally as well as the canvas wrap prints created by my partner lab are printed with professional-level Epson giclee printers and are rated to be fade-free for almost 100 years under normal conditions. (Just between us though, at age 62, I'm personally not feeling quite as fade-free as I used to.)

Note: On the images I print personally (but not the canvas wraps) I center the image area within a wide white border on the next larger standard size of photographic paper. (For instance: 6x9 photograph on 8x10 paper, 8x12 photograph on 11x14 paper, or 12x18 photograph on 16x20 paper.) This allows you to put the photograph directly into a standard-sized frame with a generous border if you choose, or it gives you plenty of room to add special matting. WHEN I DESCRIBE A PRINT, I REFER TO IT BY THE PAPER SIZE: 8x10, 11x14, 16x20. If you prefer for me to trim the picture down to the image only, I'll be happy to at no charge if you just let me know. The canvas wraps are mounted on a 1.5" wooden stretcher frame with a finished back. The sides of the canvas wrap will either mirror the image, be white or be black, depending on what works best with each individual image.
