Wondering what the difference is between gold-filled, gold plated, and gold vermeil jewelry?

Gold filled:
The process of making gold-filled is by mechanically bonding an outer layer of solid 14kt with heat and pressure to a base metal such as brass. High quality gold-filled pieces have the same appearance as 14kt gold. Gold-filled items are 50 to 100,000 times thicker than regular gold plated items. Gold-filled metal is perfectly safe and completely allergy free for those sensitive to certain base metals, such as nickel. Gold-filled items, even with daily wear, can last up to 30 years.

Gold plated:
With gold plated jewelry, the outer layer consists of a layer of 14kt gold that has been electrochemically deposited onto the surface of a base metal. This layer can be as thin as a single molecule of gold which, during wear and exposure to skin salts, will rub off and reveal the non-precious base metal. While gold plated jewelry has an obvious price advantage, if you want a long lasting piece of jewelry, gold-filled jewelry is a better option.

Gold Vermeil:
Gold vermeil is made of a sterling silver base that is coated or plated with a heavy layer of gold and generally has a more yellow gold color than gold filled because a higher karat gold, such as 24kt or 18kt, is used. Gold vermeil is often used to make pieces with intricate designs and patterns that cannot be made in gold filled. Artisan pieces can be made from cast sterling silver and then achieving a gold color by plating with a heavy layer of gold. Vermeil jewelry is high quality, and with the thicker plating, it is more durable than gold plated jewelry. However, because it is made of with a base of sterling silver, the price is a bit higher than gold plated or gold-filled jewelry. Although the sterling silver layer is covered with gold, it can over time tarnish and thus darken the gold layer.
