Wendy Tournay Ceramic Designer/Maker of Contemporary Luxury Fine Bone China Products

After completing a BA Hons in Ceramics with Glass Design at the University of Central England in 1998, I spent three years designing for the ceramics industry both in-house and freelance before returning to study in Stoke on Trent. Here I undertook a Masters at Staffordshire University in Ceramic Design for Production which was completed in 2003.

Following my MA I won many awards for my work, such as the Jaguar cars product design award for my Hula teacup & saucer at the RBSA open exhibition, Johnson Matthey shape design competition in the Hotelware category. I was also shortlisted for the Lifestyle category of the Giftware Association’s Gift of the Year award. My work has been featured in Elle Decoration and exhibited nationally and across Europe.

Aswell as working Freelance on various projects with major Stoke on Trent potteries, I have undertaken numerous commissions including pattern design for Vista Allegre, the Clay Roofing Award’s Trophy and the Ceramic Industry Forum’s Guest Speakers Gifts.

I went on to complete a PGCE at the University of Central England in 2005 and have spent several years teaching Art and Design in school, specialising in 3D Design and Ceramics and also working as a visiting Lecturer at Birmingham City University.

I run Professional Development sessions for teachers upon request on the teaching of Ceramics and the preparation and management of ceramic materials and equipment.

I recently worked with Ikon Gallery, Birmingham on their large scale Schools Art Project, which culminated in an exhibition at the gallery in Summer 2018 and have since run family Ceramics workshops at the gallery aswell as an adult slip-casting workshop at Heals, Mailbox, Birmingham in conjunction with Ikon Gallery.

I combine being an Artist Tutor at MAC Birmingham where I teach daytime and evening ceramics classes with running my Contemporary Ceramics Practice, Wendy Tournay Ceramics.

During 2018 I have worked with Edgbaston Michelin star restaurant Simpsons to produce some unique handmade Petit Fours Plates. I was also commisioned to make gifts for their customers to commemorate their 25th birthday.

I have been shortlisted in the Gift of The Year Awards 2019, Contemporary Gift Category for my Pure Cufflinks.

From my home studio in Birmingham I combine industrial processes and the finest bone china to produce elegant, pure white, functional forms with an element of playfulness that interest and excite the senses.

Inspired by the ethos of Scandinavian design with its functionality, honesty of materials and simplicity, my work is primarily focused on creating perfectly handmade functional pieces with simple clean lines and an elegant silhouette.

I first model each new shape in solid plaster and from this I make a mould. Each handmade piece is then slip-cast in fine bone china, fettled, dried and fired. I heat and dip each piece into a glossy transparent glaze before its second firing to enhance the pure clean lines.

Due to the challenging nature of the material, pieces are often lost during the many stages of the complex production process making each finished piece extra special.
