About

What if...?

"I'm going to do woodworking full time." Oh if you could see the looks on my family members' faces when I shared this with them! You see, I had a great pharmaceutical sales position with a great company, with great customers (and may I add great pay and benefits). Leaving this comfortable position was a sobering thought, and still is. Was I afraid? Sure, but there was something else that frightened me more... regret.

I had some skill. I had people saying nice things about stuff I made. Family and friends enjoyed getting handmade items for gifts. But like many other people, a hobby slowly turned into something with more teeth. People actually wanted to pay me to make things for them! This is the main piece of the puzzle for any business... do people need/want your skill? I also had friends with unique skill sets that could help me start the business. Given these factors, I walked out on the limb.

So back to the fear of regret. It's one thing to see something coming and proactively address that something. You still have the ability to act on it. Contrast this with watching an opportunity slip away only to later ask the hopeless question: "What if... (you fill in the blank)."

My story doesn't necessarily rest in a feverish desire to build stuff from wood all day long though it is a joy. I have many hobbies, but woodworking seemed to be best medium through which I could experience entrepreneurship.

Having said all of this, I desire to do what I can to loosen the chains of mass production and big box retailers. Don't get me wrong, I value these b/c they have an important role in society (Where "wood" I be without Home Depot and WalMart?). I like to think of What Wood You Like as an option for people who "wood" like to have a more involved role in deciding what they put into their home or give as gifts. When was the last time you heard someone express admiration over the TV their mom and dad had in the 1980s? What about a bookcase from IKEA?
I like the items such as great granny's rolling pin and kneading bowl she used for those biscuits. I like pawpaw's toolbox he made when he was my age. I like them because I have an emotional attachment to them. Just by looking at these items causes me to pause and appreciate the sacrifices they made in their time on earth. They are symbols of an era gone by.

Perhaps the things that I make will strike up these same emotions for someone in the future. Maybe, just maybe, years from now, a mom or dad could be pointing to one of my products while telling their child: "This was your great granny's."

I hope you enjoy the things What Wood You Like has to offer.

Sincerely,

Vick Vickery
