About

Why Lotion Bars

Traveling through south western Colorado with its towering ponderosa pines, aspens, and dramatic rock formations I chanced upon a rustic old fashion general store with a long narrow boardwalk and low pitch roof hung with at least 9 hummingbird feeders teaming with swift and graceful brilliantly iridescent aerial aviators not so patiently waiting in line for their turn.

As I stepped through the door I felt as though I was stepping back in time, back to a simpler era, perhaps the turn of the century when the west was wild and stagecoaches carrying weary travelers stopped to refresh themselves, and buckboards loaded with supplies delivered every essential a local homesteader would need to get through winter.

Every nook and cranny was filled to the brim, floor to ceiling with a remarkable collection of treasures. There was something to gaze at in each and every corner, high, low and in between. I was completely wide-eyed and awestruck by the astounding array of delightful surprises from whimsical to practical on display. Finally my eyes settled on some small silver tins sitting atop the lunch counter next to the cash register. The proprietor encouraged me to slip the lid off and try a solid lotion bar. I chose the lavender and was immediately struck by the intoxicating fragrance but much more so by the luxuriant lotion the bar provided. I was sold!

So I’m back California slathering on my lotion bar like the lotion fanatic I am, constantly taking my little 2 oz. bar and liberally applying it everywhere my skin needs a little lubrication; but after 2 months I realize it’s getting pretty thin and I begin to panic, I mean really panic because I realize I’ve become totally addicted but can’t afford another trip to Colorado just to buy a lotion bar.

After a few days of pondering my options of how to obtain a bar long distance I finally decide to flip the tin over to check out the ingredient list and low and behold I see I actually have every ingredient and some, Bingo!

After extensive research I have what I believe are the correct measurements so I try my hand at my first bar, perfect. I’m totally impressed with my success.

Since my first lotion bar I have refined and perfected the process and included specially formulated all Organic/Natural oils and butters beneficial in skin rejuvenation and healing.

As for my company it took me some time to come up with a name, I kept asking myself to describe “what is in a lotion bar”? And “what is a lotion bar”… Well a lotion bar is natural, creamy, soothing, calming, and fragrant. A lotion bar is zen-like; a state of coolness attained through a totally laid-back type of attitude, inner peace, centered and wholly relaxed. Zen emphasizes the attainment of enlightenment and personal expression. I asked myself over and over, faster and faster “What’s in a lotion bar”?, “What’s in a lotion bar”?, “What’s in a lotion bar”? Then I heard it “What ZEN a Lotion Bar”. And there you have my story of how What Zen a Lotion Bar came into being.

Please join me in indulging yourself in the Zen-like pleasure of beautiful, healthy luxurious skin.

AFRICAN BLACK SOAP: True African Black Soap, also called Anago Soap, Alata Samina or Ose Dudu is real soap which can be very dark in color, but it is never actually pure black. Black Soap does not need lye as an additive because it has naturally occurring lye found in the plantain or wood ashe; nor does it have the addition of activated charcoal. Black Soap varies from light brown to deep black in color, depending on the ingredients used and the method of preparation. The use of different oils (which also vary by region) can also result in color variations. Black Soap has long been used for healing problem skin and is made from the ash of harvested African plants such as Plantain, Cocoa Pods, Shea Tree Bark and Herbs. These ingredients are sun-dried then roasted in a clay oven to get its deep color; water and oils such as Coconut, and Shea butter are then added. The soap is then left to cure. Black Soap breaks down dead skin by dissolving the sebum layer that holds on dead skin. I'll be happy to custom blend a signature fragrance all your own. Each lotion bar is individually scented so I’m able to adjust fragrance levels accordingly for an even stronger or softer scent.

Custom deodorant fragrances require a minimum order of three.

BIG JOSH’s Tattoo Pigment Protector vs Over the Counter Protectors

BIG JOSH’s Tattoo Pigment Protector is Organic and unless you’re allergic to nuts, will only increase the healing process and help retain the integrity of the ink without synthetic chemicals.

Most over the counter pigment protectors have five ingredients Petrolatum (a byproduct of crude-oil), Panthenol (vitamin B-5) , Glycerin (lubrication), Lanolin Alcohol (acetic acid and lye) and Bisabolol (resin from turpentine).

Can I use BIG JOSH’s Tattoo Pigment Protector Immediately

Big Josh recommends you apply the Pigment Protector before you even walk out the salon door! It's actually formulated to be used immediately to promote healing from the very start. Big Josh uses it exclusively, NEVER any other protector products, no alcohol, no soap; just a slight rinse of excess ink with lukewarm water. When bathing, if you feel you absolutely must use soap, just a tiny dribble of Dr. Bronner's is the best, but it's not really necessary.

CRUELTY FREE

What Zen a Lotion Bar products do not contain animal ingredients with the exception of cosmetic grade beeswax, so we’re not vegan. I do not purchase any ingredients from suppliers who test on animals and we put hours of research and personal testing (my family, friends and myself) into our products to ensure they provide you with excellent results. Where possible, the products we sell are organically grown and processed, or as close to what Mother Nature intended as possible.
