About

Life As We Know It

In what is called the "Oregon Outback" I grew up with a mother who was an avid sewer, a father who could build anything he needed in his shop, and a sister and brother who possessed wild imaginations coupled with great talents and curiosities.

Making things was always a part of my life, but upon leaving for college I stopped crafting nearly altogether as I became more and more serious about pursuing fine arts. Then one day I began dating a proper Oregon cowboy who reveled in having hand made shirts, quilts, and wild rags always showing off the items to his friends and boasting that I had made them. With the incentive of getting to dress my cowboy the way some girls dress Barbie dolls I got back into sewing and crafts with a vengeance that made me remember just how much I enjoyed it.

Years later I moved to New York City, sans cowboy, to earn my Masters in Fine Arts. During my time in graduate school I of course painted a great deal while on the side I continued to make small handmade bits and baubles. Upon graduation I jumped back into my hobby, this time aiming for a wider audience by joining Etsy.

I now live and work in Brooklyn on an old Bernina sewing machine and Juki surger left to me by my wonderful grandmother, Peggy, who was always pecking away in her sewing room at some project or another. The process of crafting leaves me feeling closer to the family that I miss so much and am constantly homesick for.

Kyzya the doxi helps with all projects, although he is careful not to get any hair on items. He loves rolling around in the silk scraps left over from making Wild Rags and enjoys keeping Sarah company as she works.
