Note from shop owner Hello!

I'm shutting down early for the holidays due to a family emergency, but I will be back with a bunch of new bonsai and kusamono pots (in time for planting season), plates, and dishes. Come check them out in January!

Happy Holidays!

Whisting Fish Pottery

Even though Pottery is not the only thing I do, it is one thing that I keep going back to. Ever since a class in 3rd grade, I've enjoyed playing in the mud. All of my work is hand built, simply because I've found hand building is far more flexible than working on the wheel. I feel it also gives me a much more intimate connection to my work, so every piece is unique and special.

I'm based in beautiful Brookings, Oregon, a small coastal town just over the line from California. The spectacular views and wilderness around every corner are a powerful influence, and I often find inspiration just watching the flow of nature around me.

The concept of the whistling fish started when I made a small hollow fish modeled off a peculiar looking species of fish I first saw working with the fishing fleets in Alaska. They were round and had an almost comical expression that stuck in my mind for many years. Combined with the superstition among fishermen that whistling on board would cause a storm, the image developed of a small round fish whistling to keep the fishing fleet away. The Whistling Fish was born!

    Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator

Somewhere along the way in a winding trip up and down the east coast as a child, I discovered art. Even though many other interests have found their way in, and others have passed out, art in one form or another has always been a strong influence.

  • Squeaky

    Entertainer And Foot Warmer

Squeaky joined the act after spending 4 months at the local shelter. She's often found chittering at birds out the window and enjoys a good belly rub. Seeing as she lacks the opposable thumb needed for pottery and typing, she's the entertainer.

  • Isis

    Heating Supervisor

Isis officially joined the crew for good after a 6 month internship as a long term foster. Her current duties include lap warming, making sure the boss gets moving in the morning, and complaining whenever its cold! She's fond of warm space heaters!

Welcome! All my pottery is hand built, (I don't use a wheel) out of cone 5 stoneware or porcelain clay. Its finished with terra sigillata, oxides, or commercial glaze and fired twice (or more) in an electric kiln unless otherwise noted. Right now I'm fascinated with the results I'm getting using the terra sigillata, its such a simple, historic finish with rich results!

----->I WILL REFUND EXCESS SHIPPING CHARGES IF THE LISTED CHARGE IS MORE THAN $1 HIGHER THAN ACTUAL COST OF SHIPPING INCLUDING PACKING MATERIALS. Please note I include the price of box and any shipping materials in the actual cost of shipping. <-----

Any piece more than $40 will have insurance cost included in the shipping charges. I also include delivery confirmation on all US orders.

If you want expedited shipping to a destination in the USA or different international shipping, contact me via convo and I will give you an estimate, then if you approve the estimate I will either bill you via paypal invoice or put together a custom listing with the new shipping information. Most of my shipping prices reflect the most reasonable cost option available

I usually ship within 2 business days of your payment clearing.

Buttons are packed between layers of heavy cardboard then placed in a bubble mailer.

All other pieces are carefully wrapped in bubble wrap, then use a larger box filled with peanuts and Styrofoam pieces. As the post office likes to play football with boxes, I find this is the best way to assure you end up with the same number of pieces I packed, instead of a box full of sharp bits suitable for landfill. Because of this extra care, shipping charges do include some handling and supplies. I do my best to keep this to a minimum by using free priority boxes, and re-using boxes, peanuts and styro where ever possible.
Additional policies and FAQs
All my work is hand made so some variation in shape, color, and size is expected. Pottery clay and glazes have batch differences similar to yarn and fabric, so exact matches are not always possible. That's half the fun!

I will accept custom orders, but the usual turn around on anything I have to build from scratch is 6 to 8 weeks due to drying time and firing schedules. I may have some items similar to what you are looking for sitting bisqued and waiting for glaze, in which case custom order time will be less. CONVO ME and I'll see what you want and what I have. Buttons in particular I tend to have many stashed ready for glaze. If you need something sooner, I MAY be able to get the item built, dried, and fired sooner, so convo me.
