For the love of old embroidery--and its makers
I have long been drawn to the humble yet spectacular household goods that were hand-embroidered by typical housewives--themselves often humble yet spectacular--in the first half of the 1900s.
I take great pleasure in rescuing their work from attics and linen closets, admiring it, cleaning it and transforming it for today's home. As I handle the needlework, I wonder about the maker's personality, hopes and dreams, for these, too, are contained in each piece of the past.
I opened Wichita Stitch in the summer of 2012 as a way to preserve and share more of this vintage embroidery and to give myself a green light for continuing to collect and recyle it.
Wichita Stitch is headquartered in a garret--the finished attic of my 1931 house--but it has branched out. Although the fabric selection, sewing, making and packaging take place in the attic studio, the vintage fabric is cleaned in the basement laundry room, sometimes stains are sun-bleached on the first-floor deck, and all the paperwork happens in the second-floor office. Like Grandma's embroidery, Wichita Stitch won't be confined to the attic!

Hi. I am a Midwesterner who moved East during the Carter administration. While happily making my living for three decades as a scribe, I never gave up my sewing machine or my fascination with vintage textiles, especially embroidered ones.
