Announcement   Welcome to Wide Sky Ranch's online shop, home of lovingly handmade alpaca goods.

Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico we breed and care for these beautiful animals, and work hard to bring you premium alpaca products made in the USA. All knitted items are done by hand. Occasionally we also feature commercially produced items we sell in our studio. When this is the case, those items are properly listed
If this is your first time looking at our shop, you will notice different types of items made from alpaca. Our goal is to offer buyers unique items, some expensive due to the amount of alpaca used plus time involved in making them, while others will be inexpensive. Let us know if there's something you would like to see in our shop.

Each May our alpacas are sheared , thanks to our professional shearer, Tom, and his assistant plus the help of a number of local friends who sweep the floor after each animal is sheared, bag the fleece of each animal (3 bags per alpaca), weigh fleece bags and vacuum animals to remove as much dirt from each one as possible. Now it's time to sort through all the fleece, deciding whether fleece will be spun into our yarn, woven into rugs, or felted for such things as our popular felted soaps. My husband, Dave, and I are in the process of retiring from raising alpacas so ranch tours are no longer available. Should you or someone you know wish to possibly raise alpacas for pets or to show, please contact us as our lovely herd is for sale. We will continue with our Etsy shop plus our Venice, Fl studio where I make and sell our products.

About

A New Beginning

Two years ago while my husband and I were revisiting Santa Fe, NM we happened to visit a local alpaca ranch. While there petting the alpacas in the fenced pasture it dawned on me that we had found them utterly fascinating while living in Germany where they were featured at a local petting zoo. At that particular time in our lives settling down on a ranch was out of the question with my husband's career, but once he retired and our daughter graduated from college, we were ready to take the plunge.
Quickly we purchased 11 beautiful acres in Santa Fe and began the construction of our home and barn.

Fast forward to Christmas 2014 when we moved into our house. The three adult alpacas and three offspring were moved over to our barn and we began to unpack our belongs. Soon afterward after much research we purchased our electric carder and picker so we would be able to begin some fleece processing, the goal being to create sheets of felt. We also experienced our very first shearing this past spring on the ranch and have had three planned breedings here, resulting in one birth already with another due in November and then next year.

Why raise alpacas? What's so unique about them? Their fiber is incredibly fine, one of the finest in the world so products made of it are incredibly luxurious. Besides being a very fine fiber, it lacks the scales which can make some other natural fibers itchy. Also, alpaca fleece lacks lanolin, an oil found on many other fibers such as wool which some people can not tolerate next to the skin. No problem with alpaca.

Knitting was introduced to me by my mother who was a very gifted knitter as well as crocheter. Since then I haven't stopped working with yarn, but always returning to knitting. We now own our own alpacas, expanding the fiber experience. Love it!!

While almost everything I market that is an alpaca product from our alpaca herd, I simply can not keep up with the demand for alpaca socks. This company produces high quality alpaca apparel from Peru which is both reasonably priced and superb quality.
