A New Beginning

Two years ago while my husband and I were revisiting Santa Fe, NM we happened to visit a local alpaca ranch. While there petting the alpacas in the fenced pasture it dawned on me that we had found them utterly fascinating while living in Germany where they were featured at a local petting zoo. At that particular time in our lives settling down on a ranch was out of the question with my husband's career, but once he retired and our daughter graduated from college, we were ready to take the plunge.
Quickly we purchased 11 beautiful acres in Santa Fe and began the construction of our home and barn.

Fast forward to Christmas 2014 when we moved into our house. The three adult alpacas and three offspring were moved over to our barn and we began to unpack our belongs. Soon afterward after much research we purchased our electric carder and picker so we would be able to begin some fleece processing, the goal being to create sheets of felt. We also experienced our very first shearing this past spring on the ranch and have had three planned breedings here, resulting in one birth already with another due in November and then next year.

Why raise alpacas? What's so unique about them? Their fiber is incredibly fine, one of the finest in the world so products made of it are incredibly luxurious. Besides being a very fine fiber, it lacks the scales which can make some other natural fibers itchy. Also, alpaca fleece lacks lanolin, an oil found on many other fibers such as wool which some people can not tolerate next to the skin. No problem with alpaca.

Knitting was introduced to me by my mother who was a very gifted knitter as well as crocheter. Since then I haven't stopped working with yarn, but always returning to knitting. We now own our own alpacas, expanding the fiber experience. Love it!!

Knitting and fiber arts have always been a central part of Julianna's life as well. She is a knitting hobbyist and a merchandising professional. She's part of the team here to meet your alpaca shopping needs.

  • Peruvian Link Alpaca Collection

    ME, United States

While almost everything I market that is an alpaca product from our alpaca herd, I simply can not keep up with the demand for alpaca socks. This company produces high quality alpaca apparel from Peru which is both reasonably priced and superb quality.

  • The Shepherd's Mill, Inc.

    Phillipsburg, KS

    Quality spinning of all fleeces.

  • TX Handwoven Creations

Zamora Fig Thread makes wonderfully fragrant soaps in small batches. Each scent is designed carefully to nourish our skin, sometimes specifically for the face and other times for the entire body. Lots of natural ingredients which are listed on hers as well as my products.
