About

From Fiddles to Hooks

I made my first dime as a toddler, playing the violin in a grocery store parking lot. I had already discovered the joy of sharing the art of music with others, and earning money doing it was just the icing on the cake.

Fast forward many years, to a season filled with musical opportunity - right up until I damaged my shoulder and ulnar nerve. A long sabbatical from the violin left me feeling creatively stuck. On a whim, I picked up a 'how to crochet' kit from Walmart and instantly fell in love. The motion of the hook felt much like the bowing of the violin, almost natural to me. And it didn't irritate my shoulder nearly as much as the hours of practice and performance.

A year later, a friend was raising money for a missions trip, and I decided, again on a whim, to sell some crocheted items at a local bazaar, with all proceeds going to her trip. Wiley's Whimsies was born! The bazaar was a huge success, and I sold many more items over that holiday season. The following year was the year of the beard-o. Many hats flew into the hands of friends, even though my etsy shop stayed silent at the time.

Now, another year has passed, and it is time again to raise some money, this time for some friends who are adopting special needs children from overseas. I can't wait to see how God provides for them as I crochet and pray and sell these goodies.

I'm back to playing the violin again, but I cannot leave the crochet hook behind. I've found the joy in sharing two very different types of art, and I'm not stopping now!

When life hands you lemons - crochet! A few years ago, a shoulder injury rendered me unable to play the violin, a passion of mine from age 3 onward. Desperate for a creative outlet, I taught myself to crochet, and Wiley's Whimsies was born.
