About

Into clay up to my elbows for almost 30 years now!

I came to Colorado just for the summer in 1976. BUT loving its sunny, blue skies, the beautiful surroundings and open minds, I stayed. I settled in Boulder, studied at CU, and eventually, with a partner opened Treats, a home style bakery in the early 80's. Just before welcoming my delightful daughter in 1986, I sold the bakery as I had decided to be at home with her full time. I wanted a creative career that allowed that time with her and selling the bakery gave me a little time to figure that out. I was lucky to find the city's Pottery Lab just blocks from me that allowed students to come and go with a realtor type lockbox on the door. I took classes there with top notch potters and would practice my throwing in the middle of the night, between feedings, while Laura and my husband slept. A year or so later I became an apprentice at the Boulder Potters' Guild. This allowed me to learn about firing reduction gas kilns and gave me access to equipment and the guidance of many longtime potters. After lots of practice, I learned to throw and hand build with the best of them. My husband helped me build a gas kiln in our yard and I slowly expanded a home studio that I never want to leave.

Over the following years I've studied with local and nationally renowned potters and sculptors. I returned to CU to study ceramics, sculpture and drawing for two years and I continue to take painting, sculpture, and drawing workshops to bring new ideas and techniques to my work. Twenty-nine years working with it and clay is still the best medium for me. Clay holds endless possibilities for expression with both functional work and sculpture. Creating with clay is physically and mentally demanding, engaging my whole being. It is simply the best!

I teach through the Potters' Guild and through my studio. Occasionally I give workshops at clay centers and colleges near me. Usually, you'll find me happily working in my studio, switching it up between pots and sculpture.

You can purchase my work through Etsy (of course) and from my website: willieggerman.com.
