About

Empowering women with disabilities in Sierra Leone to thrive on their own abilities

Women of Hope has created a space for women with disabilities to work in a safe, clean, nurturing environment, offering them the opportunity to work together, building community and relationship. This ensures that the women are able to work independently toward their own sustainable future without our assistance.

Beginning in early 2012, the first skills training classes began. Twenty-seven women learned a skill and were given small start-up kits to create products to sell. While some products were already being made and sold in the US by the women, this effort launched the formal beginning of the Fair Trade Initiative. The women were taught how to appropriately price and market their new products in order to use their new skills as livelihood for their families. A cooperative workshop area was set up in the Women of Hope office to allow the women a place to work together and keep their materials and finished products safe.

As a commitment towards self-sustainability, the women in the cooperative work to sell their products themselves locally, as well as through Women of Hope internationally.
